Plane feedback from a IL2 ace

I love the planes in this game. They are challenging enough to keep stupid people from hogging them. And they are easy enough that anybody can learn with time. But unlike war thunder , they are fragile enough to be swept aside easily by people who want them dead.

  • Keep 3rd person views away. Locking somebody into the cockpit is good and keeps the pilot visibility low. It also makes all the planes different. Aircraft with different cockpits have a advantage over those with worse visibility. The IL2 is harder to see out of than the biplane.

  • Increase “pop in” visibility for infantry and tanks on the ground a TINY bit. Im playing on a 4k monitor and i can see EVERYTHING. When i first started playing the game with the biplane on the russian side it was almost impossible to get kills with the rockets due to fact that players and tanks do not render in the game until a certain distance (basically crash danger distance). However over time i learned how to get kills and it worked out. However once you unlock bombs its a completely different thing. You can wipe out an entire ground assault from another team with a single bomb drop of 50kg bombs. Im not suggesting the devs make is so you can see everyone on the ground from super far away. But only increasing the current pop in distance maybe 200 meters so planes can do strafing runs without crashing 60% of the time. This is an EXTREME game balance issue. Too much visibility from the planes regarding infantry will break the game. So the increase can only be slight enough to help early players out. However the visibility to see tracers on the ground should be infinite and building visibility should also be quite long.

  • Battle damage improvements. So when you get a “hole” in your wing its not actually visible. In fact it doesnt seem like the plane gets visibly damaged at all. This would bring some realism to playing as a pilot to see holes in the plane.

  • Upgrade plane models and textures. While i love the planes. They are showing their age with their old war thunder models and textures. After playing the new IL2 simulator games there is so much that can be done to make the plane cockpits look sooooo much better. Since this game wont have too many plane models because of how its designed. Think about maybe giving the planes some extra love graphically!

-Aircraft bullets need to be able to go through certain buildings. For example some of the buildings in this game are just wood russian homes. A strafing run with 7.62 should go through not only the roof but even the lower floors. You should be able to kill people inside and not just shoot through the windows. However brick buildings should be more protected. Vertical attacks on brick buildings that have wood roofs and floors should still allow you to kill people inside. But attacks on brick buildings from the facade of the building should be more ineffective and only windows would allow bullets through

guiltyspark1 I’ve just gotten to levels with some of my squads that I am getting some pilots. I have asked this elsewhere but I have previously gotten ridiculous answers to straight forward questions. As you seem to know something maybe you can answer my question. When going in for a strafing run, does your plane rock or jerk from side to side ? Mine do and makes it impossible to aim properly on any target. Any fixes, settings you could suggest ? Thanks.

Sometimes you jsut get a lot of side-to-side movement in a/c - it is worse when htey have a bit of damage, but it can happen without too - I recall it was particularly bad in the I-153, and still get it from time to time.

I have just picked up the I-153 in game play today and did it in testing/ practice. I also have the P 38 which I find does exactly the same thing. I really don’t know how other players manage to fight effectively with them doing this. You can’t aim or get anything on target, at least on the ground. Air balloons are about the only thing I can shoot effectively but you get nothing for them and it’s pointless except to get them out of the way in the practice arena.

Fighters never get much XP - they have low ground attack capabilities, and there isn’t much of a bonus for killing aircraft, so they are pretty naff for grinding.

Their bombs and rockets are area effect, so precise aiming isn’t needed - the machineguns and cannon are essentially useless vs ground - you’ll be lucky to get 1 kill per game with them.

The rockets and bombs are your main ways of grinding - P-38 M8 rockets are not too bad - with a bit of experience where to shoot yoiu can get quite a few kils in a game. The Soviet RBS-82’s are nowhere near as good, but you can still get multi-kills once you have a better idea of wher to aim - which is gnerally just he enemy side of any cap point!

But even with that you’re best taking them only in invasion games where the cap points are held for longer and you have better chance of hitting enemy reinforcements or squads massed on them.

And then there’s the fighters that have NO bombs or rockets - like the new 109F and Mig-3 in Moscow, and all of them in Tunisia - completely useless for ground attack - and see comments above about air-combat not being worth it.

Fighters are the slowest grind you will ever do - my I-153 is still at level 2 as I close in on Level 32 in the campaign because I haven’t used it for several months. My Yak 1 just got to 10.

Just had a go with the I-153 in a couple of games - it has rockets now!! That’s much better than bombs it had last time I used it

Got 4 Air kills over the 2 games - 3 Stukas and a 123, got shot down once by AA - was quite good fun
