One year anniversary of the Merge

In December 2023, Enlisted’s campaigns were merged into research trees.

Naturally, it lead to a lot of positive changes in terms of matchmaking, but also inadvertently to a whole bag of mismatches and leftovers from previous campaigns.

There was a lot of stuff to be sorted out but we were told that in due time the outstanding issues would be rectified.

Let’s see what has been changed, fixed and improved over the 12 months:

  1. Battle of Stalingrad (1942-43) still hosts high BR (1945) matches, it has not been set to BR 1-3.

  2. No new high BR maps have been added to Soviet high BR to free up Stalingrad from its high BR slavery.

  3. Battle of Rzhev (1942-43) has been added, but again with access granted to high BR (1945), and even then Stalingrad was not fixed.

  4. The Ardennes/Bulge campaign was released for BR 1-3 and later changed to BR 1-5 for some weird reason. I guess to allow interwar sea-based planes to fight against sandy Italian tanquettes in the winter of 1944-45?

  5. Britain and Italy have been completely obliterated and forgotten. You can’t have their (pre-Merge) squads you want, you can’t enlist their soldiers you want, the Brits still don’t have their standard issue winter uniform and the Italians still don’t have any kind of European uniform at all.

  6. The promised “soft rule” when determining the map based on the army composition is forgotten and doesn’t work at all: you can set up an army of all-Italian squads, soldiers, vehicles and weapons, and still end up in Ardennes.

  7. Similarly, equipping all Volkssturm squads and weapons from 1945 can easily send you to 1941 Moscow.

  8. Vehicles (specifically tanks, motorcycles, APCs) still don’t even have basic faction decals (red/white star, cross) or randomized turret numbers. Let alone biome-linked automatic paintjobs system, which was obvious to become necessary with the Merge so must have been prepared beforehand. The weirdest thing is that those skins exist already from campaigns, just not used.

  9. In the year after the Merge there has not been even an attempt to address the issue of Volkssturm weapons and late war vehicles like Pz IV J or Puma appearing in early war battles like Moscow or Tunisia.

  10. Premium squads added to specific campaigns have not been updated with any kind of new battlefield-appropriate cosmetics: the Moroccan squad from Tunisia is still fighting in Normandy wearing bedouin robes and the Volkssturm squad from Berlin is still assaulting Moscow wearing business suits and VS armbands. Moreover, new premium squads such as Panther tank disguised as American M10 or Volkssturm guerillas in fur hats easily appear in Rzhev and Tunisia respectively.

  11. The overwhelming majority of additions to the tech tree (not even event or gold order) after the Merge have been fake/fictional/unused in WW2 weapons and vehicles such as AS-44, RPD, AutoHei, Tokyo Arsenal, HoRi, T20, Hyde, etc.) while very few actually “WW2” items get added.

  12. Dozens of iconic WW2 vehicles and weapons are still locked behind a pay wall (such as Churchill, Valentine, Firefly, Lewis gun, etc.) while non-WW2 stuff like AS or HoRi even get both premium and tech tree versions.

  13. Modders get zero support from the developers. The modding portal was opened but the community is left on its own to figure out the tools, file locations, game logic, etc.

  14. Time and resources were spent on the horrendous “Halloween” event which resulted in talks about the implementation of a Cosmetic Filter but it has not been mentioned ever since, despite a good portion of players applying immersion breaking decals in huge zoom onto their vehicles, affecting the game experience of everyone but themselves, ironically enough.

  15. Custom Games have received zero support or updates. We can’t even launch a match with anything other than BR1-5.

  16. The Merge caused nearly identical weapons from different campaigns to coexist, creating weird discrepancies. For example, Beretta 38/42 and Beretta M1 or “M1C Garand” which is on BR5 while “Sniper M1 Garand” is on BR3 and definitely was not used in WW2 (post-war scope).

  17. An APC class has been added, but many of those “APC” are just trucks and not actual armored personnel carriers. Meanwhile, other trucks are not classified as APC in the game, but rather transport vehicles/props.

  18. The premium Soviet female medics squad has had horrendously bugged 3D models since forever, probably since it was released? The soldiers aren’t even holding their weapons in their hands.

  19. In the year since the Merge, with the exception of Burma, we haven’t opened up any new fronts (such as Soviet-Japanese front, Italian front, battle of the Black Sea, etc.) nor did we get any “generic” maps not linked to a specific battle or year, which would allow for less immersion breaking.

  20. Factions still remain largely unbalanced by access to squads and mechanics: flexible BR paratroopers for USSR and not for anyone else, trucks as APCs for everyone except Germany, SPAA in tech tree for USA and Japan and only as old event squads for USSR and Germany, flamethrower tank in tech tree just for USA, phosphorus grenades for everyone except USSR, and maybe most importantly - loads of squads for USSR, Germany and USA after the Merge of different campaigns and very limited selection of squads insufficient to build 5 different BR presets for Japan.

  1. Bonus point: just before the Merge happened one year ago, a different, more logical and promising system was tested, but just for a couple days, which assigned letters like “N” for Normandy or “T” for Tunisia which would determine where the given item would be able to appear. However, it was only run on the test server where there aren’t many real players, only for a short while and most importantly without any restrictions on power level, which resulted in the classic “Stewart vs Tiger” issues which led us to the Merge conversations in the first place.

It’s a real shame that that system was drowned in “why am I fighting against STG with my M1903 comments” and instantly discarded (possibly, even intentionally by the devs).

I believe it really had potential to be accommodating both for matchmaking by liwer level, and eliminating insanities such as Panther tank disguised as American M10 time travelling to the 1942 Battle of Stalingrad.

Dear Santa @MajorMcDonalds I hope some of these points can find their way to the 2025 roadmap.

Which one of these is fake and fictional?

As far as I know, all of them are historical WW2 prototypes? :tipping_hand_man:

Why is that a problem? :tipping_hand_man:

Yep, almost as if all or most of these issues could have been predicted in the year or so the Merge was in the works…

It makes certain vehicles rare sight on the battlefield when in real life they were common. Good example are churchill, matilda, valentine, firefly, sdkfz 251, m3 halftrack, chi-ha and stug 3g. All of them were really common and well known irl but they are rare ingame because premium. Then we have vehicles such as A13, ta-se, m2a4, panzer 3b, t50 and t28 that were much rarer vehicles but are really common sight ingame because they are free.

I still havent seen a single valentine tank in my 3 years of playing even tho it was the most produced british tank in ww2.

Majority of them wouldn’t be common even if they were in TT.
How often do you see stug 3f?
They’re not meta. That’s what matters more.

But I disagree with you on something, I see sdkfz 251 and m3 truck very regularly.

Now you have Chinese in Normandy/Tunisia  Game is already a War Thunder it’s only matter of time when they are going to merge both teams and we will be fighting KT vs KT

Funny, as good 95% of those issues would be fixed by going with my micro campaigns idea lol

Thst is an good point but i dont think it always works like that. Lets take A13 as an example. It is one of the most common tanks that i see in usa br 1-3 matches. Sometimes i can even find it in high br. Why is it so common when it is folder unlock and it is much worse than m5a1 or m3a1 stuart that are in the same level? New players dont know what is meta and they will use pretty much anything that is fast to unlock. Some people use ab 41 even if its worse than the reserve tank for an example. Some of these premium vehicles could be quite popular amongst new players if they were in tt.

Also some of them would be worthy to use even by experienced players such as the churchill and chi ha.

But do you see them more often than sdkfz7 and studebaker?

Because everything in BR1/2 queue is extremely random and inconsistent.
There’s no proper reasoning for A13 to be popular.

Unless it’s the premium one. And it is part of the bargain bundle offered to all newcomers.

As far as i know the bundles have only included m24 and churchill. Also the premium a13 has special camo but the ones i have seen are standard tan

That’s not the bundle I am talking about.

Okay, that says it all. Weird.

The merge was a complete overcorrection to a relatively minor issue. I never agreed that we should have swapped to tech trees. We should have kept the original campaigns but made weapon transfer universal.

  • For example: if you unlocked the Garand in Normandy, it should be automatically available for purchase and upgrade in Tunisia and the Pacific.

The only reason why some factions and campaigns were deserted was largely due to no one wanting to grind several dozen levels for the same junk that they’d previously already unlocked.

But now we get hardcore metas and random units showing up in places where they weren’t supposed to be like Volkssturm Militiamen in Moscow and Z Force raiders in Tunisia.

the reason was the ability to pick only a single side of a campaign. And as more campaigns were added population got more and more diluted, to the point win farmers could just completely overtake one side of a campaign and have the other one be completely unplayable
Tunisia allies and Berlin Axis ended up with almost guaranteed wins every round

Budapest or the Vistula would be fine, Sebastopol (44), Crimea,Battle of Narva,Battle of Golap They would also be good options to have more variety in BR V against the Soviets.

In all honesty I would even be happy with “Polish village” or “East Prussian town” to not be tied to exact historical dates or recreation of real sightseeings.

Because knowing Enlisted devs, they would add something like Kursk 1943 and allow IS-2 and T-34-85 to time travel there again…

They add named locations because it is more exciting. Popular locations such as kursk and normandy gain more attention than generic village 3

It was simply one of the default-ish starting tanks and a lot of people have it in think
Also it is much lower level than an M5 or M3 Stuart…nowadays the M13 and the awful M2A4 are just as “popular”
And ironically…the A13 is so janky with its weird layout its harder to kill than eiter lol

We could have a system where each map has a separate lineup you can make

You build said lineup using your existing soldiers and weapons and vehicles…but each battle/microcampaign has a (mostly) HA list of equipment that was seen in said battle

Devs could go ham
1939 Poland, Invasion of France, Finland vs USSR fights, Manchuria, Barbarossa, Kursk, different phases of fights in Africa, etc
We could have smaller nations, add nation specific soldiers, tons and tons of gear over the years

The price to pay is you no longer can 100% lock in a side of a fight and a campaign you want. Sure, you can tell the MM “hey I kinda feel like playing Allies in Normandy” but if there is 10 people like you for 1 enemy queueing in said battle…tough luck

Personally I feel it would be worth it ¯_(ツ)_/¯
