No-Mans Land Distances on Eastern Front

From what I read in Soviet memoirs, frontlines between Axis and Soviets were nearly point blank next to each other - and hence attacks and offensives wouldn’t take place like from 5 miles away.

I.e. - there wasn’t like frontal assaults from 5 miles away, on enemy positions lol because front lines were next to each other - maybe 100 meters apart.

Every video game I see on WW2 does these miles and miles separations between sides, where in reality - they were a few hundred meters apart. In WW1 and WW2, Eastern or Western fronts.

Am I right on this, historical nerds?

There’s a reason why the Soviets prefer close range engagements because of the Luftwaffe bombing their positions like what happened in Operation Barbarossa. Forcing to the enemy fight in close ranges is known in Stalingrad that gives the Luftwaffe a hard time to bomb due to risks of hitting their own troops on the ground.

The mass usage of SMGs especially in battles like Stalingrad, Berlin and other battles especially urban combat were also a factor too.

What are you talking about? In game the front lines are only like 100 meters apart. What is the point of this post?

so whats the suggestion? the lines are close enough

they aren’t. Take Fortified District map - lines are too far. Many other maps are too far distanced. So that’s my point.

This game it’s sorta fine, they keep it close. But just wanted to mention this fallacy that I see in WW2 games. Frontlines were always close to each other, regardless of fronts, or world wars.

Stalingrad yes, of course. If you read Vasily Zaitsev’s memoirs - he mentions that many times. And in many other Stalingrad memoirs I’ve read - Soviets kept it really close to Germans, to avoid artillery hits, and airplane bombs.

Or read Victor Nekrasov’s “Front-Line Stalingrad”. One of the best memoirs about Stalingrad, i’ve read.

Maps in Moscow campaign are already pretty small which favours SMG meta and renders action bolts pretty much useless… moving frontlines even closer on some maps feels like a bad idea from gameplay perspective tbh. But I agree, that Fortified district have lines pretty far from each other (which is what partially makes that map better in terms of gameplay).

Ironic, I know.

The lines are too far because the back of the front lines (which would effectively be frontline command HQ) for both sides are maybe 200 meters apart? That’s really freaking close

Fortified is the worst map. First of all, plane spam is ridiculous on this map - A point and spawn areas are wide open, for plane spam. Main road is also always spammed by planes. Long open distances, and only way is forward. Etc. Stupidest map so far, I just skip it always.
