New matching making - two weeks later

I rather like it.

(Note: I started about 3 months ago, so play BR2 all the time, with Allies and Russian, NA server.)

As an Allies main, before the change, it got to something like 1 win out of every 4 or 5 games. Now, it’s the opposite. I used to also see German generals and marshals ALL the time. I’d have numerous games where they outnumbered those on the American side by anywhere from 2-1 to 5-1. Now, given the recent meme change in the gear, which seems to be an obvious factor, more often than not, I see the veterans on the American side.

I concede that MM is likely not the complete answer to why the change [in veteran participation in one side or the other, and for more balanced matches] has happened, and it could well be meme (4th of July and the Radio Operator event) - though, in a way, I fail to see why. It’s not like the 4th of July Event helped the Americans in BR2. (The gun reward is BR5.) And the radio operator for the Americans is only recently come available.

In any case, whatever the reason, matches in the lower tiers, in my experience are a lot more even and fun.

As every player can chose which side they want to play it is important to understand that it matters alot what the general reputation of each faction is.
Nobody wants to join a match were they will be stomped so as soon as side A gets a boost (like the current events favoring US) a lot of the veterans that make up the backbone of each faction will flock to side A to try out the shiny new things and in the progress leave side B temporarily drained while facing even tougher opponenets. This in turn makes side B worse to play and gain a reputation of “not worth playing/ suffering” which only reinforces the self fullfiling prophesy that side B suffers until at some point the hype around side A fades and the player return to side B.

This behavoir isnt new and can be annoying but addressing it might be impossible for DF so it will continue to happen again.

This is why trying out diffrent factions is important as the one you are playing might become unplayable overnight if you cant stomach losing constantly with a faction.

I think it’d be great if DF did things that encouraged that type of behavior (playing more than one faction, etc). Whether something where you get bonus silver or XP for the first match you play of a a faction or whatever.

Two points though.

  1. Completely irrelevant here, since I’m playing a BR2 set of squads. There haven’t been a lot of “new shineys” for BR2 Allies recently, that I know of.

Yes, there are new American paratroopers, but only the most aggressive players would even have those right now. Also, It’s why I mentioned that I failed to see how “new shineys”/new meme were applicable, above. I just see/read that being a constant refrain yet I would love to actually see it in action. A BRV reward for a side when it’s earned by playing ANY side doesn’t make any sense for those players to play in BR2.

  1. Going back to my original point - that the MM does seem better - it DOES.

To your other point - about reputations/memes about one side or another being worse - I agree with you there. Once a side gets a rep, I do believe it can be hard to shake.

But, there’s a lot to unpack here as well. There’s what Tier is being played, what time of day, what server it’s on, etc. My experience as a relative, post-merge noob, playing mostly American and some Russian, on the North American server in Eastern Standard Time - is not going to be the same as an Eastern European player, playing in GMT on a non-NA server.

Plus, not everyone (remotely) even gets on forums to complain about what the current meme is anyway. I think ultimately, it gets down to current experience. Once someone loses 4 out of 5 times or 8 out of 10, they say screw it, and try something else, whether a different game or alliance or whatever.

I know I did. I put the game down for a couple of weeks and only came back after the announced MM change and am glad to see that in my time slot, on my server, and on my side - there’s actually some balance!

In that regard - thanks, DF. FWIW, I bought another $100 US of gold coins.

Allies in someway are actually superior than Germans. Feel pretty sad wehraboo facing shits for BR 1-3 because:

  • A 1000lb bomber named SBD-3 Dauntless for some reason is in BR 2 instead of BR 5
  • Heard some of their tanks have armor issue which penetrates most 50mm canon shot on the side at some angle (not high)
  • Paratroopers… You can equip them low BR weapons and still spawn it in BR 2 matchmaking just to get BR 5 weapons in BR 2 match

The weight doesn’t exactly equate to effectiveness. The 1000Ib bomb is good but about equal to other 500 pound bombs. The SBD-3 is also slow and has terrible guns. So its in a good spot.

It’s not because of MM changes, it’s the T20 being added to the Tech Tree

mhm

Nope you can’t you can only get BR3 weapons inside BR2 crate. Which is still an advantage but not as huge as you expected, at BR1 soviets can use their paras and spawn DP-27 or SVT-38 sniper. And Americans can spawn BARs, Lee Enfields and Bren at BR2 from the box.

thats interesting because last match as a german guy, I died to thompson 100 round drum in BR 2 matches against Allies

There are not enough of you in a MM so even BR2 will get matched vs BR5. Everything is based around soft rule and tommy 100 can’t be picked up from the crate they spawn with that gun, 6 of them.

Well, one guy who happens to have a single squad of paratroopers is not how anyone should be judging whether the entire matchmaking issue is resolved or not.

In the long scheme of things, I think DF needs to incentive players playing in more than one faction. All four, if possible.

But, I also know that if I play Russians and Americans in BR2, and they are losing to Germans non-stop for weeks in a row, then there’s an imbalance. The opposite is also true, of course.

And the better matchmaking is a step in the right direction to making the overall game enjoyable.
