Since a lot of us players would agree that balance on certain campaigns is not so great, and on others it’s hit or miss. With that said, I would like to suggest two possible gamemodes that could possibly aid in improving balance, even if it’s a small improvement:
Mixed Battles - where both Axis and Allies fight Axis and Allies (But only for the same campaign for the sake of balance). or:
Lone Fighters - a dedicated Lone Fighters mode like what is found in custom battles, only part of an official matchmaker mode.
I put ‘or’ instead of ‘and’ in the title as some might want one mode over the other. I myself would prefer mixed battles over Lone Fighters, but I thought I would keep Lone Fighters fans in mind when making this suggestion.
For Mixed Battles, I think this would be a great solution as it would be a separate mode from the main mode in case a player does not wish to play Axis and Allies against Axis and Allies. Not to mention it would somewhat eliminate balance issues with a certain faction (EG: One side having a better rifle, or better SMG over the other), because both factions would play for and against each other. Of course, to prevent confusion, blue tags would be over teammates, and perhaps red tags over enemies if they are within 15 meters give or take. Maybe further out if the player is using a sniper rifle.
As for Lone Fighters mode, I will acknowledge I don’t play it often in custom battles, but I would not say no to having it be an official gamemode. I think this would make use of classic style match types such as conquest more practical, and make CQC maps like Stalingrad more exciting. This could also perhaps be more of a hardcore mode, where friendly fire is a possibility since you don’t have to worry about AI getting in the way, or having to manage them. Not to mention it would also give the feel of a more classic FPS like Red Orchestra Ost Front, or Darkest Hour Europe.
Conclusion: Either mode I think could help aid in overall match balance, and/or provide new gameplay options. Be sure to comment whether you want one mode, both modes, or neither mode, and specify why.
