My thoughts on the Steam release

Some of the language being tossed about around the aborted Steam release makes me sick to my stomach. As if someone who is running a business with operational costs is trying to take advantage of them by charging them for things. Guys, programmers don’t photosynthesize, servers don’t run on good vibes.

Then, when the dev pulls the plug (I suspect) because support was overwhelmed, or because people would rather review bomb than contact support. People act like scolds and tell the devs how they β€œneed to do better”. It’s sickening.

No one owes you a game. Someone charging money for something that costs them money to operate and support is not ripping you off. The customer is not always right.

People were writing bad reviews, so I wrote a good one:

Yeah, some people were definitely a little out of line.
We should be respectful to developers, be gentlemen and have constructive discussions.

Woah watch out. That kind of talk makes you a β€œbootlicker” and a β€œdev sympathizer looking for free EG”

I mean, it was a really bad idea. But people are also just dicks when they don’t get their way. It goes both ways.

True that

Enlisted is an awesome game, I have no problem spending money on the game because it has great gameplay and graphics and it has bots to flesh out matches which a lot of other games do not bother doing.

I think if the 3 packs on Steam were $10, $20, and $30, people would not have had as much of a problem, although there were other bugs too, like automatically getting your War Thunder account connected via Steam rather then being able to choose was noted by some people and that would be frustrating if it happened to you.

They could just release the game for free on Steam and then have some paid BR I-V infantry and vehicle β€œDLC” packs you could buy through Steam if the player wants to jump ahead into a specific tier.

The reddit style hostility and hate toward the company for trying to find ways to make money off their product is really immature and dumb, but I guess that comes with a free to play community and console gamers.

No one owes you a good review.

This is a free to play game put on steam for 30 bucks. Clearly, whoever planned this didn’t think this through. Don’t want to maintain server costs for your β€˜Free to play’ game, then be my guest and shut them down.

Customers don’t want to get ripped off and most people on Steam were not aware that Enlisted was F2P and purchasing said bundle when they wouldn’t have if they knew they could play it for free not on Steam.

This is 100% Gaijin marketing tactics right here. There is no way to justify steam players having to buy the bundle.

Devs need a wakeup call, their game is not a Unicorn in the game industry and they just fumbled a steam release for a quick cash grab.

I will say DEVs aren’t responsible for marketing choices like this, blame the publisher Gaijin. Nobody on steam is discrediting the fact that the devs don’t work on this game.

Also when you apply a filter like this on the forums, it is degrading for the forums. Why should I need to play 2 games when I’ve played 1000s. I’ve been a longtime player and I had to play 2 games just to post this. The censorship on these forums reminds me of having a dictator run the show; can’t say much about their poor choices and lack of action without reprisal.

you forget, they need a player base if they want to make profit, ideally one that increases over time

but all they are doping is trying to get a free buck, the game is already pay to progress
we aren’t owed a game but they aren’t owed a player base

Did anything I say imply that a good review was β€œowed”? No, please don’t put words in my mouth. If an honest negative review is given, then I see no problem. What I have a problem with is a lot of the language in the reviews and the fact that people who otherwise enjoy the game are (in my opinion) more upset about the situation than is warranted.

This is free to play game that can be played for free on the freely available client available on Gaijin’s website and is the first result on a websearch of β€œenlisted”. The $20 (not $30, you are factually incorrect) to access the servers THROUGH THE STEAM CLIENT helps cover the cost of PUTTING THE GAME ON STEAM BECAUSE STEAM COSTS MONEY. Not only that, but Steam offers improved community functions that many players may find useful. Also, the statement that β€œthey can shut them down” tends to suggest that you’re arguing in bad faith.

Or former β€œcustomers” (by your own admission, you had to play a couple of games just to post in this forum) like yourself, got offended on the behalf of other people and decided to give the devs β€œa wakeup call” (your words) and review bomb it. Fact is, this game has been all over social media (I heard about it in a Russian Badger video), and it has been for quite some time. It was also not really pushed on Steam, and AFAIK only people who played the game through the Gaijin client would even know to look for it. I paid my $20, got my two squads, gold and premium time and I have no regrets.

It costs money to put the game on Steam and Steam offers improved community functions that players who already play the game may find useful while being willing to pay a small amount (seriously, you can pay $20 US for a hamburger, these days) to fund development and Steam costs. There I just justified it. Also, it’s faster to log in with Steam.

Because why should they listen to someone who doesn’t play the game? Also, it helps cut down on spambots. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I forget nothing, they have a player base, and that was who they were looking to move over to the Steam client. Who would hopefully not review bomb the Steam release and act as beta testers for the early release.

It’s not pay to progress, I basically finished Japan’s tree without paying a dime. Yeah, it gets a bit grindy, sometimes, but the game itself is fun, so whatever. As far as that last point, I think it’s funny, I never said anyone owed the devs anything, as a matter of fact, entitled attitudes was what really upset me. You don’t want to drop $20 US (or whatever local currency equivalent) for no other reason than to support development of the game, fine, but don’t refuse to pay, and then act like it’s unreasonable when you’re asked to pay for added features, that it costs money to add and support.

They are free to express themselves as long as it is within steam’s guidelines. Gaijin has no authority on how Steam players review their game. Don’t like it? Then take it off Steam like they did.

Also I am not arguing in bad faith, I wanted this game to succeed; however, the publisher’s poor choices ended up destroying all of the developer’s hard work. Stop justifying poor choices made by publisher.

I don’t blame devs for marketing decisions. I blame shitty publishers for making poor choices, I have mad respect for programmers as I am one myself.

Please do your due diligence and research about stuff you talk about when you are clearly spreading misinformation. Steam has pretty much no upfront costs, and only charges 30% if you purchase a steam key through steam website/app. However, they don’t even charge anything if you sell a key from external / 3rd party website.

Please stop with this misinformation. Go look it up for yourself, I was actually looking to publish one of my indie games on steam. Don’t spread bullcrap.

This is dumb, people know what a good game is without having to dive into it. They can watch videos of other people’s gameplay and make appropriate opinions.

Plenty of us are angry about steam release and have spent plenty of money in this game. I was in support of this game, but I can’t support choices that turn this into a dying game. I’m pretty sure I’ve spent over $100 in bundles, gold, etc… so please stop with this entitled bs you keep bringing up.

We are entitled to review how we want, that’s the gist of it and people didn’t like that they released a game that is out for free for $30. End of story.
