Hello, my fellow comrades.
Today I just want to present you the idea of an alternative-historical campaign for the future (since DF gives a damn about historical accuracy after all and mentioned that they eventually want to go beyond WWII) and my first suggestion:
Operation Unthinkable, aka an Anglo/American-Soviet War after the fall of the Nazi Empire.
Note: These are just thoughts and I know its really unrealistic that DF would introduce this campaign, but I somehow like to discuss such topics and Operation Unthinkable would be truly new since I do not know a game with the exception to HnG where the Western Allied nations fight the Soviets in a “normal” WWII era.
MAPS
My thoughts concerning maps are that the campaign should not focus on one city/ area, but on multiple battlegrounds. By that, both sides would have the same chance to attack/ defend in this campaign and would cover multiple German cities at once we might not face in other campaigns. The campaign should have an exclusive focus on Germany, although I could image maps in Czechoslovakia and Poland too.
- Dresden. Dresden, hold by the Soviet Occupation forces, is going to a battleground, where the Soviets have to defend the city against Allied Invasion forces. Also, Dresden is the first main target of the Allies in Operation Unthinkable. I suggest the following places as possible “sub-maps”
- The Frauenkirche and Neumarkt Square
- The Royal Palace
- The Semper Opera House
- Hamburg: The Soviet forces launched a counter-offensive in Northern Germany, including Hamburg, in order to stretch out the outnumbered Allied forces in Germany. The Allies have to defend this time. Possible locations:
- Hamburg FlaktĂĽrme
- Hammerbrock - District of Hamburg-Mitte
- St. Pauli-LandungsbrĂĽcken
- Leipzig: The Soviets have to defend the ruins of the city against the advancing Allied troops after the fall of Dresden. They once again have to defend in order to stop the Allies from reaching Berlin.
- Völkerschlachtdenkmal
- Napoleon-Square
- Leipzig-Thekla Concentration Camp
Note: Maybe even Berlin and Cologne could be part of the camapign too althugh we already have Berlin.
ARSENAL
The arsenal would be the most interesting aspect, as the majority of the Allied gear was designed to counter the Germans and not the former Allies. Similar to Tunisia, the Allies would include multiple nations (United States, United Kingdom/ Commonwealth and maybe France) and therefore their arsenal and division setup would be mixed again.
GUNS:
-
Starter/ Bolt-Action Rifles:
The Allies should start with M9103 (again) as it was used among other Allied nations too. The USSR should start with the Karabiner 98k “X” as they had a lot of them and used them. It would also give us options to have more BA-rifles.
Shortcut:
M1903 Springfield / Karabiner 98k “X”
MAS-36 / Mosin Nagant Model 1891/ 30
SMLE Mk. III / Mosin Nagant Model 1944 Carbine
Lee Enfield No. 4 / Mosin Nagant Dragoon Rifle -
Semi-Automatic:
I just gave the Soviets their two SVT-versions and the Allies the basic US-rifles M1-Carbine and the good old M1 Garand.
Shortcut:
M1 Carbine/ SVT-38
M1 Garand/ SVT-40 -
Submachine Guns:
Although I would give the Western Allies more submachine guns, it would simply create a gap between the factions. USSR should get the same SMGs they use in Berlin, except PPD. Thompson and Sterling would not be that bad compared to PPSh and Allies could compensate their weakness with better MGs.
Shortcut:
Sten Mk. III/ PPS-42
M3A1 Grease-Gun/ PPS-43
Thompson M1A1/ PPSh-41 (box)
Sterling Submachine Gun/ PPSh-41 -
Machine-Guns:
Similar to the SMGs, we can not use too many Allied MGs due to the numerical lack of machine guns on Soviet side.
So that’s why I recommend having three MGs per side.
Shortcut:
BAR M1918A2 / DP-27
Bren Mk. III / DPM
M1919A6 / DT-29 -
Assault Rifles/ Special Automatic Guns:
Soviets get AVS again and the Allies M2 Carbine.
Shortcut:
M2 Carbine / AVS-36 -
Rifle grenades
More or less the same like elsewhere except that this time the M1 Garand can be used as grenade launcher.
Shortcut:
M1 Garand with M7 grenade launcher / Mosin rifle with Diakonov grenade launcher -
Shotguns:
Soviets get their hunting shotgun and the Allies the Winchester. Simple.
Shortcut:
Winchester M1912 / Toz-B -
Scoped Rifles:
Nothing new here too except the scoped Enfield.
Shortcut:
Springfield M1903A3 / Mosin–Nagant M1891/30 Sniper Rifle
Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk. I (T) / Snipers SVT-38
Sniper M1 Garand / Snipers SVT-40 -
Flamethrower
Nothing new here aswell.
Shortcut:
M2 Flamethrower / ROKS-3 -
Anti-Tank:
I gave the USSR Panzerfäuste and Panzerschreck (like in Berlin) as they do not have any launcher on their own except the Ampo (aka the Potato cannon) which saw limited use in the first phase of Operation Barbarossa and I don’t think it would make sense to give them PTRS and PTRD in this scenario and due to the massive amount of captured Fäuste.
The Western Allies start with PIAT, then they can unlock Bazooka M1A1 and Bazooka M9A1 and at last the M18 recoilless rifle. Quite simple, though I do not know if M18 should be the last AT gun as it is less powerful than M9A1.
Shortcut:
PIAT / Panzerfaust 30
Bazooka M1 / Panzerfaust 60
Bazzoka M9A1 / Panzerfaust 100
M18 Recoilles Rifle / Panzerschreck -
Premium
Since the Western Allies planned to rearm their German POWs, they should get German Premium Squads armed with German guns such as StG-44 and MP40 and Gewehr 43. But they also get Johnson MG with a Devils Brigade unit. The Soviets mostly get weapons which were built/ tested prior to the end of the war and the drum Thompson. I do not have any clue about Premium bolt-action-rifles yet.
Shortcut:
Assault rifle: STG-44 / Fedorov Avtom
Submachine Gun: MP40 / Thompson M1928A1
Machine Gun: M1941 Johnson Light Machine Gun / RPD
SA-Rifle: Gewehr 43 / SKS-31 -
Tanks:
This is going to be interesting since a broken tank and plane meta can lead to frustrations and power creeps. So I am not sure about the setup here and would be glad about better ideas.
Shortcut:- M5A1 / T-70 (Starter tanks)
- M8 HMC / SU-76M
- M24 Chaffee / T34-76 (Model 1943)
- M4A2 / T34-E STZ
- Sherman Firefly / T-38-85 (D-5T)
- M18 GMC Hellcat / SU-85M
- Churchill VII / KV-85
- M4A3E8 / T-38-85
- M26 Pershing / IS-2 (1944)
- M36 GMC Jackson / SU-100
-
Planes
- Spitfire Mk. XVI / Yak-3
- Mosquito FB Mk. VI / IL-2-37
- P-51 D-5 / Yak-9U
- B-25J-20 / Pe-2-359
- P-47 N-15 / La-7B-20
I hope it was interesting to read. I am open to feedback (despite that its unrealistic that DF would add this etc. etc… . I know.).
Cheers.
