Other information
“Mukden Type 2” is the name attributed to a Chinese submachine gun that was produced by Mukden Arsenal. The weapon lacks an actual designation, and has also been named under the generic name “Chinese 11.43mm Submachine Gun”.[1]
History
The Mukden Type 2 was a reverse-engineered copy of the Nambu Type 2, which Chinese troops had captured in limited numbers from IJN Marines during World War II. Production started around 1946, and it is thought that only a few hundred were ever made before Mukden was captured by the Communists in 1948.[2] The remaining quantities were seized by the PLA and fielded to a limited extent during the Korean War, where at least some were captured by NATO forces and examined in the United States.
Today, very few examples of the Mukden Type 2 have survived and are only found in museums or archives.
Design
The Mukden Type 2 was a blowback-operated, closed-bolt submachine gun that was generally identical in operation to the Nambu design it was copied from, with the return spring wrapped around the barrel rather than fitted behind the bolt. The principle difference between the two iterations of the gun was the .45 ACP chambering used for the Mukden copy, whereas the original Japanese model was chambered in the less powerful 8×22mm Nambu round. The gun had no provision for single fire and fired in full-auto only.[1]
The gun also took numerous design cues from the Thompson, including the placement and design of the cocking handle and the four-slot muzzle compensator. In addition, it fed from 20 or 30-round Thompson box magazines. The standard of manufacture was relatively poor.
