Yeah it is. Its the story of 5 friends, that get caught up in the war

From memory

One is a field Nurse

One is a Wermacht Field officer, His younger brother is a soldier in his unit

One is a Singer/Entertainer for the troops

One is Jewish

Their Character arcs are pretty crazy and touch on many of the themes.

Trailer gives you a good idea

Even though it’s from South Korea. But the zergrash on tanks is a meme.
There are films that show the horrors of war. And there are films that turn horror into memes.

There is a famous meme.

I would love to see it someday, but there is no way to watch it in Japan.
If only it was on Netflix or amazon prime I could watch it.

Personally, I would classify that movie as a comedy.
Especially the portrayal of the Japanese military.

But, There have been several recent Korean war movies of high quality.
Brotherhood is my favorite.

Well, that is not a WW2 movie.

If I had to choose my favorite Japanese war film, this would be it.

I like that it depicts civilians who are struck by the scourge of war, but never as innocent beings.
Even the main character, a young girl who loses her arm due to an American bombing, supported militarism. However, it is also depicted that this was a natural course of events for these girls.
Japanese people today consider what their ancestors did in WW2 to be a mistake. However, they hardly consider the possibility of repeating the same mistakes themselves. Because they think that the people of the past were stupid and they are clever.
But in fact, they were not. Our ancestors were wise people. But they went astray. We must learn about that.
This movie and the manga work by the original author, Fumiyo Kono, teach me the realities of those days.
You will probably never have the chance to see it, but the manga “Yunagi City, Sakura Country” is also a wonderful work.
It’s just not the kind of movie that makes Wargame fun, though.

This film is considered to be an anti-war film that expresses the tragedy of war, but according to director Isao Takahata, this is not the case. According to him, this film has no power to stop war.
The film is meant to test whether society is moving toward totalitarianism.

The main character, Kiyota, is in a peculiar state of mind for a Japanese boy in the 1940s, a country at war. He does not know hardship, knows the joys of city life, and does not do any work at his aunt’s house where he has been evacuated.
He tries to live like a child, and as a result, he runs away from home, much to the displeasure of his aunt, who has evacuated him, and he can no longer stand her sarcasm and hysteria. This led to his sister’s death.
Seen from the perspective of modern Japanese values, Kiyota’s actions are understandable. A child should not labor. However, from the perspective of people at that time during the war, it was natural for him to engage in some kind of work “for his country” and help his aunt’s family.
What Takahata wanted to depict in this film was an experiment to see what would happen if a modern child were to appear in the totalitarian Japanese society of the 1940s. The audience’s impression of Kiyota could be used to test whether the society was moving toward totalitarianism or not.
A society that accepts Kiyota as a “poor child” is good, but a society that perceives him as a “selfish child” is becoming increasingly totalitarian.
Surprisingly, many Japanese people today criticize Kiyota’s selfish behavior after watching that movie.
The director, Takahata, was a liberal thinker and a man who looked at many issues in society. His last film, “The Tale of Princess Kaguya,” is also a wonderful work.
It was a film about female gender in society.

Well, I admit that Takahata’s works are wonderful, but personally I like Ghibli films as easier-to-understand entertainment works. It’s like men firing SMLE at a rapid rate.

Not a movie but a series: Masters of the air.
Sorry for off topic but it deserves a recommendation.
A series about the bombercrews of B17s.
Same good quality and atmosphere as Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

I’m half way through episode 2 (due to your pointing it out) and thoroughly enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation.

@SexyTent I’m watching it on Amazon Prime. I know from business travel that content varies country to country so… maybe someday.

I managed to find this yesterday, will probably watch it tonight, thanks for recommendation.
Said multi sub, so should be good.

I bought that movie on VHS in the 90’s.
However, it is now officially distributed on YouTube by the filming studio MOSFILM.
It cost $200 when I bought it…

It’s amazing how Russians share movies for free. Is it because they are originally communists?
