I watched a really good movie about some war that happened a long time ago, far far away. There was a lot of colours and effects, and planetary level war crimes using a bowling ball shaped space station.
It was pretty good. But the 3 most recent ones are really bad.
Good God! That p51 mustang scene!!! That was just grand! Beautiful.
That was some Spielberg here.
Now this one. It is exceptionally RARE to see a movie from the OTHER SIDE, which is why I liked it. Shows a different perspective about those our Grandfathers valiantly fought (yes, they existed!)
A quite realistic movie that shows that the dumbasses who only laugh about the French know nothing of history. My commonwealth brothers owe them their lives.
I would like to go purely for leisure. I have been 24x since 2016 for business! That has afforded many weekends to see places and enjoy but I’ve never had a straight up tourist trip.
It’s a beautiful place with helpful and friendly people. Amazing food. And… amazing sake! With today’s exchange rate it’s a great time for Americans to enjoy Japan!
As for movies, Conscript Joe hit a bunch that I’d have considered adding to what was already listed.
War Movies, there’s so many, pretty sure i watched most i can from the West.
But i do like Asian cinema War films, due to there are so many films, the west has not really seen.
One film i remember d/l ing, was called hill 203, or 203 kochi, i believe, but it was set before ww2, against the USSR?
This is what is was based on, 1980 film

With legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, (Toshiro Mifune) as [Emperor Meiji]
I’m a fan of movies NOT made in USA or Russia (both are often just propaganda movies), because I love different perspectives. Like the one about the waffen guys. It got a really low score, because dumb ppl think it “glorifies” them, when they aren’t shown exclusively as human targets (woke cancel culture I swear) when in truth it does not, as the guys realize they were kinda fooled by their leaders.
Or like that ww1 one “Nothing new in the Eastern front”. All I got from that movie is that the author cineast condemned war harshly for being what it truly is: a disgusting aberration, a horror where nobody really wins (but corrupt officials). It was perfection. It’s what I want from a war movie: reality, not glorified propaganda.
Well each to there own i guess.
Why do we watch war movies?
tell me its not the graphic scenes that we watch for, and hope to see from a war movie,
or is it just the propaganda/based on a true story, from the winners side.
if Asian cinema has the same, or even more gore in the film
I judge movie on amount of action, and effects, story.
How can you say that, when you, just watch one thing, but not the other?
Anyway each to there own
I don’t quite understand where you found the propaganda in the film “Go and See”. But which anime and manga refer to this movie?
Anyway, it’s nice to know that such a movie is famous even in Asia.
For perspective, the same cycle over and over in history for the same reasons.
The need to fill the inner desire for conflict or the inate instinct for conquest or to be a warrior
For encouragement, sounds wierd i know…but along with the worst in man, can brings out the best in man aswell…in the face of all odds. Stories of Heroes
And I just remembered. T34 is a plagiarism of a Soviet film. and it’s on YouTube.
maybe there is a movie with a translation. I’m sorry, you’ll have to find it yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or6A8QzNvrc
Nazi barbarism certainly existed, and I am sure that Go and See is a film based on the abominable crimes that took place in Belarus. However, when it is made into a film, there is no small amount of historical interpretation through the eyes of the filmmakers. Even the background music is a product of artifice. In other words, the events in the film are fiction, even if they are based on historical facts. Even if they resemble historical facts, they are different in some way. I think the same way about all films.
And a film cannot be an all-inclusive history.
For example, “Grave of the Fireflies” in my country depicts the damage done to Japanese civilians, but does not mention the perpetration of the Japanese Empire. The Wind Rising touches on the life of the designer of the Zero Fighter, but not on the people his invention killed.
History is a tapestry made up of the lives of many people, so it is inevitable that only one aspect of history is told when the story is told by one individual. Therefore, it is impossible to interpret history by watching a movie.
Therefore, I believe that a movie is just a movie. It is for pure enjoyment.
Therefore, I try to watch movies with a little bit of a detached viewpoint when they throw some kind of message to the audience.
By the way, Joe said that many American and Russian war films are propaganda, but in fact many Japanese war films are also propagandistic.
That is not exactly propaganda since they are not made by the government, but many of them have a strong right-wing ideology.
I don’t know if you are familiar with this movie, but the movie “Eternal 0,” which is about the Zero fighter plane, the original author was a conspiracy theorist with an extreme right-wing ideology.
There are many other terrible movies, like Oba: The Last Samurai.
Fly boys fly, which glorifies the kamikaze attack…
It is very rare that a Japanese war movie is worth appreciating, most of them are better not to watch. Especially modern ones.
I do find Japan to be pretty nationalistic. Not more than Germany, much of the US and many other countries, but it is notable. I don’t mean it as a criticism any more than I do for my own country. But it is noticeable.
It’s why I like watching movies from all parts of the world that covers all sides. It gives perspective that is sorely lacking for many, nowadays.
What did you think of “All quiet on the western front”? it’s ww1, but I quite loved the fact that even thought we followed German “soldiers” (really just young men that didn’t know what they were getting into), the movie authors DID NOT pick any side… it portrayed the French soldiers (and civilians) as human just the same as the protagonists: all victims of that war. There was no glory at all to be had here. I loved it. (But man was it rough)
