Add a “defensive stance” to AI command wheel.
Unlike “normal” stance, it will cause AI in move to stop, seek cover and engage the enemy. That is the only difference.
I think everybody who ever player any RTS knows what the A-move is.
I want this as (in general) stationary AI performs better than moving one. And in the heat of combat I often don’t have enough time to issue the command or I get shot at the beginning, wasting precious seconds while my squad gets slaughtered.
We may argue it’s a skill ceiling thing but imo it’s an unnecessary complication and simply doesn’t make sense.
I still see it just as useless. People keep hiding them… Sometimes I give them orders to stay in one place and they go all the way around the map while they are already there.
I agree. Perhaps it can work as a system of making them prioritize certain types of cover?
Offensive stance will let them grab whatever cover they can when they stop, whereas defensive will make them get behind sandbags, in trenches, solid walls, etc.
Pretty much locations they will be more likely to actually HOLD rather than just temporarily stop at like offensive.
As far as people hiding them, the primary reason is because they don’t behave in an intelligent enough manner to be super useful (to some people).
Suggestions like this one can help to fix that.
Personally, I like having my squad alongside me or nearby to provide cover fire while I work on setting up fortifications.
OR
I’ll position them in a fortified overwatch position with MG squad for example and they will actually slaughter for me.
The MG soldiers are actually pretty effective as is, but if you build sandbag walls and order your troops to stay in the spot just behind them, they will use the cover of the sandbag walls decently effectively, allowing you set them in useful spots that they can eliminate enemies from.
Additionally, the little red markers that you can ping with will draw your AI’s attention to those locations especially.
So if you have them sitting in good positions (sandbagged for example), and ping targets, they can be rather effective at eliminating infantry in bulk.
NOTE: my HOPE is that with @VoyoMayPL 's suggestion, this would become even better and work even more smoothly.
I have made the suggestion in the past, and still think it would be an excellent idea, but unfortunately a bunch of trolls decided to ruin the topic instead, so it didn’t get much traction.
That’s why its best to keep a cool head on the forums, as there are a number of fine details that DO exist within the game, they just need some polish, and the best way to achieve that is by discussing it, and having one of the helpers pass it along when its ready.
Most people have no clue about the pings part. I myself only found out a couple months ago. Its small details like that which I really wish they would add more information on in the tutorials.
