We already have fortifications and trenches in maps but they are scattered and few compared to real war.
People tend to view ww2 as dynamic and ww1 as trench warfare and trenches were obsolete durin ww2; but in fct trenches were used as much as ww1 in ww2. Actually, fortifications and trench systems improved in ww2 compared to ww1.
Even today’s modern conflicts, trenches and fortifications are still very effecvibe. Just look ukranien trenches and dug out defences which lies tens of kilometers in current conflict.
Normandy, pacific, tunisia, moscow maps really need more trenches, dugouts, fortifications etc …
Trench warfare is really enjoyable in games.
I agree, especially on maps where the AI soldiers actually hide in them.
I do think Moscow is pretty good as is, alternating between trenches, buildings, and forest. Some points you fight almost exclusively in trenches, some of them not at all. It’s a nice mix. The other campaigns have less variety, and trenches are fewer and more sporadically placed. Hard cover really helps slow the gameplay down.
ALL TRENCHES AND FORTIFICATIONS ARE JUST CTRL C, CTRL V
and AI never use a trench
They just standing outside and just die.
This is where I think they need to take some time to really smooth out their digging mechanic and how the resulting trenches are interacted with.
-
give Normandy depth trenching to all maps on all campaigns
-
when you are moving through a trench, your AI will also prioritize moving through the trench
-
enable a snap function (only when it is toggled on) that allows certain structures to snap in near trenches. Such as sandbags around the top edge.
-
enable an “alternate fire” mode on the shovel to build ground up, not just dig down. This way people can’t simply dig impassible trenches instead of actual AT measures.
-
make some kind of buildable “bunker” structure or even a “bridge” structure that can be set over trenches, allowing for cover from constant artillery fire.
