I have never been a fan of the static void that my soldiers are standing in while I am in the menu. It’s not bad, but I think a more immersive backdrop would be far better. Using map backdrops for squads could help make the campaigns feel even more unique, with different backdrop cycles for every faction. This is a feature warthunder already has, and the variety and liveliness of the backgrounds are something I enjoy. This game already borrows so much from warthunder, why not borrow another one of warthunders features that would make the game better?
I went ahead and designed a few examples for what I am talking about. This is simply replacing the void with a small portion of a map. Please ignore the moscow maps for normandy squads.
if it yet has to be a thing, suggest a diffrent placement of soldiers, so they are sitting around a fire or are placed around a comfortable-looking room… idk
That would be really cool, having moving components (like any of the stuff you said) would give the menu a lot of life. Might even feel like your squads are preparing for battle instead of idly waiting in a void for another match.
well there is actually, if you want to use some generic background then it’s sort of ok, but if you want to use actual map areas as a background then you would have to load a map every time you change factions or campaigns. It’s not efficient in the least and the load times between changing campaigns would suck.
Imagine changing from Moscow to Normandy and the game having to change the entirely loaded Moscow map to an entirely loaded Normandy map just to show you a background from that map
At the very least, these backgrounds could serve as quick benchmark test…
But frankly, I am not sure if it is a good idea to stress your hardware even before entering the game.
I doubt it would load the entire map, just a small portion of it. The same idea as the vehicle hangar that vehicles are shown in. So I don’t think there would be enough pressure on hardware to make a noticeable change.
However I could be wrong, and if so there should be a way to toggle the backgrounds off and keep the void as to not damage performance.
You can’t load just a small portion of it. You either have small standalone portions of the maps saved separately as background maps that you load just for the background or you have to load the entire maps.
A generic background would be easier to do and implement but then again that would defeat the purpose of the post, it would change the void to another generic background.
One way of doing it without a big impact on loading times would be to make a small map that combines elements from all campaigns, and when you change campaigns the game would move the view on that map to fit the campaign you chose. The game wouldn’t have to load a new map when you change campaigns just to move the camera on the one that’s already loaded to match your selection.
But here lies the crux of the matter, why spend time and resources on making what is literally a new map for the menu?
It takes time to make such a thing and it provides nothing to gameplay experience. It only makes the menu look nice but you don’t spend a lot of time in the menu
