I understand that this would be a very labour intensive development exercise, but… I think it would improve the atmosphere of the game by orders of magnitude:
Make buildings destructible, e.g. by aerial bombs, fire (timber buildings), tanks ramming them (small, frail buildings).
Molotovs thrown into a timber hut should, eventually, burn the whole thing down in a giant blaze and smoke that’s seen from everywhere in the map (and similar effect for flame throwers). As a phased implementation, this could be developed first - fire gradually spreading throughout a building in geometric progression, eventually making the whole building un-inhabitable.
Buildings should collapse from sufficient HE hits. One aerial bomb should be able to destroy a hut from a direct hit. Brick building’s should also be collapsible, resulting in mounds of rubble and long-lingering dust.
By the end of a battle, the landscape should be very different to what it was at the start and the sky should be black with smoke and flames from all the burning buildings.
There should be more dust in ‘dry’ maps (Tunisia) - vehicles should kick up thick clouds, as should explosions and even gunfire.
All this would really improve the atmosphere.
Aside, the current fire effect is too red. It should be more yellow.
