Most melee weapons in enlisted, are useful for finishing downed enemies that are close to you, and shovels can be use to dig trenches. But axes don’t really have a purpose. If you want a good versatile melee weapon, you should just use the shovel. One thing that could make axes better is the ability to cut down objects. Cutting down stuff, like trees could be really useful, for example for cutting down trees for clearing fields of fire for MGs and AT cannons. They could also cut down thin wall for more options for attacking. Cutting down trees and other objects could also give engineers more building resources.

I found that it is easier to destroy obsticles with an axe, like tables, barrels etc. So I mostly equip my MG men with axes such that they can clear the place from anyoing objects before mountig the MG.

You can charge with an axe the same way as with the sword or bayonet. But other than that a dismantling speed decrease would be very nice.
Axes already one shot enemies, allow you to banzai charge, and can destroy minor objects such as furniture or window coverings, what else would it need?

The axe lets you charge like with bayonets and one shots in melee. That is its purpose. It lets people who missed out on the swords have something functionally equivalent.
