it’s just a stupid system that gives you -20% experience for having a bad internet connection and the game kicks you out, but why? this doesn’t count as desertion because it wasn’t me who wanted to leave, but the game.

Yeah, it’s stupid, especially since it’s just a free video game that some take entirely too serious. I have endured at least six to eight desertions due to either internet, power outages or Gaijin’s own network since Gaijin implemented their penalty. Most of my desertions have been by Gaijin’s Network, which to be honest is a giant kick in the balls when the entity imposing the penalty is the entity that caused you to desert which caused you to incure the penalty to begin with 
. Kind of like a prison guard throwing you outside the prison, then apprehending you and adding time to your sentence for an escape attempt.

They should at least make it last for only one match, not 2.
this coming update they’re adding a 1 grace period for desertion and fixing the option to join back in.
also supposedly they’re adding a way to reset the grace period if you manage to play 4 matches in a row youll get another grace period for another desertion

Instead of -20%, just award zero silver and zero experience for the deserted battle, no credit for victory or defeat.
