Mauser Type Pistols for Japan

Hello everyone, whilst stumbling around looking for some source material or information for any sort of select fire/ machine pistols for Japan I came across a piece of writing in PDF form called " LAS PISTOLAS “ROYAL” Y “TIPO MAUSER”, PARA EL MERCADO CHINO" or rather when translated ‘The “ROYAL” and “Mauser type” pistols, for the Chinese market’.

(Keep in mind I’m putting this as an event item sort of idea)

It discussed distribution of a variety of Spanish made pistols, especially those of the ASTRA Mauser type pistols (900 - 903) that were exported to China through Japan (of whom also occasionally purchased said pistols too) until a subsidiary was established in Shanghai in 1931.

Prior to that year some of the distributors in Japan unto China would even stamp the ASTRA pistols as seen here on two ASTRA 900s with Kanji that roughly translate to “Made in Japan”

Furthermore I found an English translation of sorts that seems to plagiarise, but also expand upon some information present in the original Spanish document that specifically mentions the ASTRA 902 select fire pistol of which it claims 7,075 were made from 1928-1933; most of which being sold to China. And from the information of the Spanish document there was no subsidiary till 1931. So it’s probable some 902, and maybe even 903s were marked with the same Kanji previously shown on the ASTRA 900. Also that some of them were likely purchased in small numbers within Japan.

On an additional note still pertaining to Mauser type suggestions for Japan, I present a captured semiautomatic option.

The Shanxi Type 17 (.45 ACP) produced by the Taiyuan Arsenal from 1928-1931 used by the Chinese.

Now in terms of sources I’ll provide both PDFs and note that the Original Spanish document has a bibliography they used for information to source their document. Whilst the plagiaristic English version doesn’t but appears to pull from same sources in the bibliography.

Thank you for reading, also any and all additional information on the topic of Mauser type pistols in Japan is greatly appreciated too!

Thank you for your post.

Personally I want these as tech trees. Japanese pistols SUCK. The only useable pistol they have is of course the most expensive, the Nambu.

Adding the C96 Mauser (which was used) at least gives us another option.

Be careful, some people will take significant offense to the idea of “copypasting” more guns

In fact, “日國製” means made in Espania (Spain) , not jap

Oh really? I suppose that must’ve been a mistranslation of sorts by the sources I’m quoting from. I don’t know the Japanese language or Kanji so I took it at face value. Thank you very much for the correction if so!

Indeed you’re quite right about this. At least the Type17 Shanxi would be a different gun, or rather different enough since it’s a bit larger all around and the magazine extends down the trigger guard more than the standard Mauser since it’s in 45. Cal

I did some double checking, first simply with google translate of “日國製” and received the following results

Then I asked r/Kanji for a translation, providing just the image of the gun with the Kanji and they said it says “Made in Japan”

So idk. I’m now mostly convinced it does indeed say made in Japan. Though again I personally would have no idea

“日國” is short for “日斯巴尼亞”, not “日本”, you can search "日国造“ from chinese web

I’m still getting much the same result no matter what avenue I go through.

Here’s a quote from the Rock Island Auction, of whom sold one of these marked ASTRA pistols, and I feel RIA is a reasonably credible source.

“The left side of the receiver is marked “ASTRA” AUTOMATIC PISTOL CAL 7.63/PATENTED JULY 12, 1928/Unceta y Compania GUERNICA (Spain)”. Directly below the address are three Japanese Kanji characters which roughly translate to “Made in Japan” (refer to page 150 of “Astra Automatic Pistols” by Leonardo Antaris for information). The serial number and Japanese markings place this pistol within a known range of pistols produced primarily for the Japanese and Chinese markets"

Here’s a close up of the same Kanji on said ASTRA

And a link to the auction listing

Hey man no worries even if it wasnt made in Japan , china bought it which means its a fair game for Japan . Also I would like to see Type 80 pistol for Japan .
Type 80 is a M1911 turned into machine pistol by Thailand and since Thailand was allies with Japan , this is a fair game (It was made in 1937 ) but they are very rare .

and here is a picture of fire selector

Ooh that’s incredibly cool, and definitely fair game considering they were allies. Love the touch of the Thai writing on the slide too, would be really nice to see that incorporated in game if they’re ever added!
