Making the Johnson LMG (and maybe FG42) More Unique

The Johnson has a number of couple of really cool features which I would love to see added to make it feel more unique. In this post, I will be going over them.

One of the features that I would most love to see on the Johnson is the ability to load 5 round stripper clips through the loading gate on the side. This would be a really cool way to top up ammo if you’ve fired only a few rounds, and it can even be done on a full magazine for a total of 25 rounds.

The other feature I would love to see is the closed-bolt semi-auto feature. The Johnson, along with the FG42, is one of the few weapons that is actually open bolt when in full-auto, but closed bolt in semi-auto. So what would this mean for the game? Well, if this feature was added, it would make the weapon more accurate in semi-auto, have less delay between pulling the trigger and firing, and allow you to load a full magazine +1 round in the chamber +5 rounds through stripper clips, for a total of 26 rounds. This would also necessitate animations for switching between fire modes. When switching from full to semi, the bolt would slam forward and chamber a round with an audible sound, and the bolt would return to the forward position after every shot. When switching from semi to full, because of the unique way the Johnson’s hammer-fired system works, the bolt would have to be moved to the rearward position, ejecting the currently loaded cartridge. The ejected cartridge could be an issue, but since the Johnson can be loaded through the loading gate, they could just go back to the inventory in stripper clips. However, if a similar system was added for the FG42, the last part would not be necessary because the striker-fired design of the FG allows the first round to be fired from the closed bolt when switching from semi-auto to full-auto.

I think these features would be really nice to see, as they would make the Johnson more realistic and feel very unique compared to other LMGs.

Edit: The increased capacity would also maybe mean they could reduce the fire rate to be more realistic while still having the Johnson be a decent BR4 weapon

dont you think its rate of fire is excessive ?
i use it as a burst semi auto rifle

:open_mouth:

that and sound effects is what makes the game imersive :relieved:

Obviously the fire rate is high, but everyone is always bringing that up and I don’t think the devs will change it unless they buff it in some other areas first to make it still viable as a BR4 weapon for the Allies, so this change would help facilitate that too.

i suggested not long ago
to increase the fire rate of the slow auto fire

cause i feel like it is too slow
i think the BAR slow auto is faster but im not sure.

The rate of fire can theoretically go as low as 200, but the only way to actually adjust the rate of fire irl is to adjust the tension on the buffer spring, which I’m pretty sure requires disassembling the weapon, and can cause reliability issues. It really should just have the fire rate fixed at around 600-700.

that fire rate is the sweet spot for weapons. :relieved:
