Make the intelligence less artificial

I have one big issue with AI positioning themselves on the battlefield. When you tell your squad to go inside the building, two or three soldiers het inside and the rest is just running around it, usually dying in the process, be it from enemy fire or artillery. The same happens when you order them to go into the trench - two or three go and the rest run around on its sides.
So my suggestion is to teach the AI what a building/trench is.

That would actually require it to be more artificial. I heard they use some self-learning for AI so it may be better in a year, or it will learn bunny hopping from players.

To have bots take cover in trenches and building they would need to have artificial preference for sitting there. So premade positions for squads in defensive positions would be best.

Something like company of heroes had for squad orders would be great, a highlight of positions that the squad would take when we want them to hold position. Like have them all take cover in building and watch windows instead of running around and getting killed by artillery

Yeah its a pain at times. Sometimes making them close formation work out but can still be buggy. Hopefully they will fix this soon.

Perhaps giving them some kind of CoH movement system for them to :slight_smile: Like you can line them up against cover and stuff. You could also move them individually but also that takes time and can be messy to

The only thing that works reliably is personal orders - then AI goes exactly where they’re told to.

I don’t know, I know shit about programming and self-learning AI, but couldn’t they just mark the borders of every building and trench on every map and make so that if the squad location order (idk how to call it, the function of the “X” key on the PC) is within those borders, every AI soldier must also be within those borders?
I know that it would take a lot of time to map every building in the game, but DF usually improves the AI only every big update or so, so they have plenty of time to do so.

Yeah pre made positions would take some work, just like digging needed to have areas with hard ground that never have holes.

But since most buildings are copy-pasted they could have just positions in buildings mapped, and then just improve trenches.

There are still other pathing issues, like You jumping in through window, and bots taking all the way around building to the door, while getting killed

What? AI can go on the train? Last time I’ve played armored escort they just ran alongside it.

Also, I haven’t noticed that in Tunisia. It is kinda weird with that game - Tunisia has the most gameplay features and imo the best maps, yet it is the least played campaign (I think because of poorly chosen progression unlocks).

Honestly I think this is the way they should go, and since Tunisia is the newest campaign hopefully it is. Just have some pre-made spots for cover that the AI latches on to and uses. It doesn’t seem worth it to me to have some crazy advanced self-learning AI that chooses the “best” cover. Sounds a lot like programmers having cool ideas that are way out of scope. But I also can’t see behind the scenes so idk maybe its best

they already do that.

if you play custom games and face full bots, you see some of them jumping around for no reason and other times pre eptively jump to get at a higer position.

god’s know ( if exists ) where those “guys” will be the next year.

otherwise yeah, sometimes they don’t even listen to personal command order :confused:

I am actually impressed by the AI in this game. Sure, there are some harsh problems. But these sprites feel more human than other bots in other games - they don’t seemed to be on a track. I liked reading about the self learning AI above though.

This should be a way well I don’t have to lose my man by some random chance because they wanna be crazy and run out and get shot I wonder why the ai Can be so random at times it makes it hard to keep them in order and I also get glitched into the floor sometimes too
