Instead of this trash game mechanic, players should be able to choose the nationality of their squad and recruit any nationality as they please.

Honestly what would you lose if Italy stayed part of Axis, but you could recruit any Italian squad, nothing.
But I would lose my mixed deck, I have a mix of Italian and German squads.
I want to have a mix of German, Italian, Hungarian and Romanian squads.

No one complains about NKVD, conscript, regular and guard units fighting alongside. Noone bats eye if SS, Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht, Volkstrum, Geibsjäger and Fallschirmjäger units fight together, so why is nationality such a big deal?

Battles like Operation Compass, Burma, Dunkirk. which is purely Italy vs GB would never be able to happen if the two countries dont emancipate themselves. But also you will never be able to have battles were only US or Germany participated in. Like Attu or Norway.
