At the moment rifle grenades are fired in a way that is completely unrealistic. In reality most (if not all) of them would require the soldier to load a blank cartridge and only then they are able to fire the grenade.
Currently the only grenade launcher with kind of realistic loading steps is the RMN-50.
So I would therefore propose that all rifle grenade launchers should be changed to the following:
1.) Rifle Grenade is mounted and loaded
2.) Single round reload (clip for Garand / mag for carbine)
3.) Firing
4.) Bolt cycle & ejection of cartridge
→ Back to rifle grenade loading if more grenades
This should
1.) Make them actually work like they did in the real world
2.) Slow down the firing rate of rifle grenades notably and make spamming them less viable
3.) Allow an evaluation of potential increase of individual rifle grenade lethality when spamming is harder
May be frustrating when you have a full magazine so you have to unload all or most of your bullets, HOWEVER, then the rifle grenades could work as intended, and actual explosive.
" The ROKS-2 was designed not to draw attention, so the fuel and gas tanks were concealed under a sheet-metal outer casting resembling a knapsack; the flame projector was designed to resemble a standard Mosin Nagant rifle. The purpose of this was to prevent the operator from being specifically targeted by the enemy. The flame shots were ignited by firing specially modified 7.62Ă—25mm Tokarev cartridges."
Well, since 1916 (year of creation of VB rifle grenade) there exist shot-through grenades, they basically are a cylinder with a hole for the bullet to pass through, while the gas that initially propelled the ball then launches the grenade.
