Make body armor a backpack item

If cosmetic armor is going to confer advantages, it might as well be treated as an in-game piece of equipment that would be balanced by its slot category, instead of an add-on. Equipping armor would become an opportunity cost between the other backpack items.

Tradeoffs.

Every other faction can have this as an option once they get their own custom models

As to what the stats would be- And I’m just throwing ballpark figures here:

  • An additional 10% movement penalty on top of any penalties their existing weapons have in exchange for 66% damage reduction against shrapnel, making them very resilient to random battlefield explosions without affecting their survivability vs small arms.

  • A BR assignment of 4, an additional movement penalty of 20% and a flat damage reduction of all incoming sources damage to the torso by 3.0. This makes them capable of surviving multiple SMG hits, but still easily killed by headshots or rifle-caliber weapons.

Interesting thought experiment for sure - flat damage reduction can make them specifically effective against low damage sources…

Well 3 damage reduction would still make them survive rifle rounds - but if the movement penalties and removal of ammo pouches exist these sound like a fair traid.

That being said, if you lock them into high BR where people dont use SMGs anymore, this would ultimately be a pointless effort again.

My opinions on armor is the same on vehicles as it is here.

Irrelevant against same-BR threats, but punishing against the poorly-equipped.

It’ll certainly help against guerillas, and even assault-rifle-equipped soldiers, but goes down from ubiquitous rifle fire.

Putting them in a position where they would regularly see SMGs would be too strong.

Soviets did use them in Stalingrad already tho right?

Also, 3 damage reduction is actually much more than it already does - it will stop then not only FG42 rounds, but now also G43 rounds, not to mention they would probably make even bolt action down instead of kill more often.

10% damage reduction for most guns would be like 1.5 damage for semi autos, not 3.

Realistically speaking they should literally ONLY stop pistol and SMG rounds and should have zero effect on rifle rounds.

I could start making some research at what distances a Kar98k would start having trouble penetrating those plates, but since I bet we are talking about ranges above 500 meters, this wouldn’t be worth my effort…

Personally, I would be just fine if DF just did away with the body armor.
