Because of the fuselage mount of the P-38 making it the easiest plane to kill tanks with. Every other plane (Thunderbolt included) has wing mounted rockets, which means you have to deal with convergence more than you do with the P-38, meaning it is easier to hit tanks with it, and axis tankers notice they are dying to P-38s more than any other plane, and they cry about it.
