I think this is straight forward.

The M36 GMC currently appears to be using the default M77 shot (which is a solid shot without HE Filler)

WHY APHE is King in Warthunder/Enlisted

…as long as APHE can pen somewhere, it reigns.

APHE detonates 360 inside the tank (incorrectly). All other Ammo types have a cone area of effect.

In War thunder for example, on certain Italian and German tanks there is a choice between 2 APHE shells…the rookies always pick the highest Pen shell…the Vets always pick the Lower pen shell…why?

The rookie sees the extra pen and thinks more pen means it must be better…

The Veterans know that penetration only matters up to the point you can reliable pen. After that you want after pen damage that HE filler provides.

Vets pick the lower pen ammo because:

  • its Still enough penetration to get through the majority of targets
  • If it penetrates anywhere, the 2.6x extra HE filler pretty much guarantees its a 1 shot kill

What has this got to do with Solid shot? This example just illustrates how much more valuable excessive HE filler is over excessive Penetration. Solid shot is further gimped by having a cone pattern damaging effect.

All other ammunition types do inferior damage and require specific targeting (due to the cone area of effect). Solid Shot, AP, APCR, HVAP, HEAT…Theses are the ammunition types you dont really want to use, but are forced to absent APHE that can do the job. They often have really high pen, but unless you hit the ammo rack or target crew one by one…the damage isn’t likely to 1 tap a tank.

Currently M36 GMC is BR 5 with the M26 and Super Pershing (Im thinking it should be BR 4)

So In reality the M36 GMC Jackson:

  • Has he same gun as the M26
  • Has worse default Ammo (M26 default ammo is M82 shot APHE)
  • Is open topped
  • Has no real armor

Recommendations

BR 5:

If M36 GMC is to remain at BR V, it absolutely must have M82 shot as its default ammo. But even then it’s pretty redundant with M26 and Super Pershing doing the job better while being protected.

OR

BR 4:

Move the M36 GMC to BR 4 (along with the Sherman Firefly that also uses solid shot)…Even here you could justify M82 shot being added aswell…and it should be

Conclusion

Personally, I think BR 4

It’s just the protection level of the BR3, only comparable to the Panther’s artillery, a BR5 paid tank. Can it really be sold?
Another point is the expensive price. :skull:

I believe (almost) all tank destroyers are too high br.

It’s probably because all devs sees for balance, is the canon, and nothing else.

there should be some form of incentive to use tank destroyers over their better tanks counterparts (such as lower br)

for example:
Su-85 is br 4… like the t34-85. Why use this td instead of a tank? it should be lowered by 1 br (br3) to compensate it as no defensive mg, nor turret.

or the new jagpanther. same thing. a good canon, but no turret. should be br4 perhaps also (no one will use it instead of a better tank, again)

marder 3H… that’s just a mere engineer built canon, on tracks. it’s really bad, compared to pz4H!

M18 GMC… it’s sexy… but made of paper. why use this, instead of the m4A2(76)W? should be lowered there, again…

etc. etc.

I’d say the only TD that is fine at br5, currently, is the Ho Ri production. Because that one at least got a real advantage over tanks of it’s tier, in the form of powerful armour.

Tank destroyers, are in a sorry state, in Enlisted.

It would be cool if we had a mobile TD for each faction in BR5 that were capable of killing tanks better than infantry-support tanks. If the M36 could reliable deal with King Tiger, while being mobile and having a very limited number of HE shells (so it can focus on its job as a TANK destroyer) would be really cool. Rather see a buff than pushing this to BR4 where it will still also be forgotten.

pretty much the curse of TD while they follow specifications of war thunder. they either have to be under BR’d to even have a chance of being considered (which is the same principle as what you just said)…or just be redundant

in the Jacksons case…BR 4 would make it the only 90mm…possibly attract some players

also considering they opt to give nations captured launchers instead of say a bazooka with extra pen. doesnt seem likely they will doctor ammunition
