The M1A1 Thompson had the extremely common 30 round box magazines that, after all rounds fired, left the bolt open on the final round. The M1A1 Thompson is open bolt and has no 1-in-the-chamber, so that’s good, but they need to fix the animation at the end so your character doesn’t pull the bolt back.
I think this will provide some well deserved advantages to this underrated submachine gun and make it more realistic as well. There are other open bolt firearms in this game that do the same thing, so it’s simple to do for the M1A1 as well!
Does the gun have a built-in system to lock the bolt open when the mag is empty? Otherwise, the bolt will close whenever the user tries to fire with an empty mag. So it will need to be manually opened again.
An open bolt reload should only occur when reloading before the previous mag is empty, or if the user counted the rounds perfectly and released the trigger just after firing the last round.
I looked it up and it does have a last round hold open, meaning yeah, it should have the same animation regardless of current ammo count.
Apparently the Wz.39 Mors is modeled correctly in game like the M1 Thompson should be, that is you just change magazine and never pull the bolt back because it, like the Thompson, has a last round hold open.
Well the M1A1 Thompson unlike a lot of other open bolt firearms didn’t require the bolt to be pulled back on the 30-round box magazines because the design of the magazine kept the bolt open on the last round. Again, the M1A1 isn’t the only gun like this, but the fact they overlooked this extremely common feature is disappointing and hopefully it’s changed.
It’s not just the 30-rounders, it’s apparently like that on all Thompson box magazines, including the 20- rounders. This would mean that all Thompsons using box mags should have a last round hold open.
From Wikipedia:
“In contrast, the “XX” twenty-round box magazine was light and compact. It tended not to rattle, and could be inserted with the bolt safely closed. The box magazine was quickly attached and detached, and was removed downward, making clearing jams easier. The box magazine tripped the bolt open lock when empty, facilitating magazine changes. An empty box was easy to reload with loose rounds.”
Also interestingly enough, also according to Wikipedia, you had to pull the bolt back before putting in the drum magasine:
" Military users of the M1928A1 units had complaints of the “L” 50-round drum magazine. The British Army criticized “the [magazine’s] excessive weight, [and] the rattling sound they made” and shipped thousands back to the U.S. in exchange for 20-round box magazines. The Thompson had to be cocked, bolt retracted, ready to fire, in order to attach the drum magazine. The drum magazine also attached and detached by sliding sideways, which made magazine changes slow and cumbersome."
This would mean that the drum fed Thompsons are also not being reloaded properly, as in game you replace the magasine before pulling the bolt back.
That’s interesting, I genuinely didn’t know those details, that’s why I was doubtful.
In that case, yes, reload animations should probably be corrected. The main question is, how high of a priority is that compared to the rest of what the Devs are cooking.
Dude. I bet you’re happy with the new animations now huh?
I just dislike the triple tap to the mags for M1 & M1A1 when the M1921, M1928A1 and .30 Carbine version only needs to insert it a bit slowly but I’m surprised to see this thread when trying to find out when they changed the animations recently
