So in the Battle of Berlin Trailer we get to see the Swastika flag. But that has been changed from what I remember with a Wehrmacht flag. What bothers me the most are the German uniforms and Battalions. It’s always the same generic “125th Infantry Battalion” and “10th Tank Battalion”.
Post Scriptum added the 9th SS Panzer Division which was very rare to see in video games and their uniforms are fully detailed. What I’m trying to ask is, is this game now censored due to media? I’m not a big fan of game companies that are scared of journalists.
I don’t like the fact that the swastika is banned and not in any ww2 games because it is probably the most authentic and memorable images from ww2 and it’s ridiculous that in the context of a ww2 video game that these bans should affect anything other than people who display it because they stand for what it stands for.
Also, it’s like playing pes instead of fifa in terms of how it feels, like fifa Arsenal FC, Pes London red.
It’s rubbish lol
I am however really enjoying this game and have been waiting for it coming back for ages, checking the discord so it’s not a deal breaker for me. Just venting my frustration at the problem of the world at the moment to want to hide everything.
Actually swastika isn’t banned in any european country AFAIK. I mean as long as you don’t use it to promote nazism etc. You can use it in videogames, movies and other stuff in context of WWII. Even Germany does not ban such use, and recently (2 years ago IIRC) they made it much easier to use swastikas in games. IDK about Russia though, they might be much more sensitive.
Pretty sure its still completely restricted in Russia, I know some European nations, like Poland for example, have exceptions for artistic depictions but I don’t think that exists in Russia.
It isn’t banned in Russia if that’s what you are getting at, but our constitution is very vague in that area. The only restriction is that you can’t use it to glorify the ideology behind it. In legal terms that’s a whole lot of subjective nothing. I’d say in practice it means that everything would be up to the judge to make a call on a case by case basis.
I think this thread being in suggestion is actually a good thing, as it explores the issue created by official Berlin playtest trailer- that can be seen as false advertising, even for playtest (game not being censored may also be motivation for history fans to play, only to realize, that it was in fact false advertising and censorship is active into the point, where censored flags look almost amusing).
SUGGESTION: Add button in options that would enable “historicaly accurate textures”, which would of course be followed with a warning, that this option enables historicaly accurate textures, can be seen only by player and does not affect gameplay in any way. Or perhaps monetize this option.
I would dare to say, that people would love to fund the game by purchasing such option AND keeping p2w away from Enlisted.
Why I´m even suggesting that? As it was stated above, players just love companies that aren´t afraid to add a bit of history into the history based game (which can possibly have good effect on playerbase as result) and that few who don´t like this (which is perfectly understandable), will have option to never turn it on.
Swastika’s and the like are simply banned in many countries. Including them in your game, even as an option, will get the game banned in said country. Soooo this is never happening.
I have only done short search in this matter, however as far as I know, there is also enough countries banning any soviet symbolism as they are considered symbols of hatred as well (Ukraine, Georgia, Latvia for example) which is something that is included in Enlisted uncensored.
Wouldn´t be just easier to allow to manipulate with this option (or easier… allow its purchase) only in certain countries, in order to open Enlisted for wider market (assuming, there is enough countries, that allow usage of symbols of hatred for educational and artistic purposes)?
Right now, one can argue, that this is not as much about breaking the law, but also about using double meter.
Of course, I´m not a lawyer, nor marketer.
Technically speaking hammer and sickle is also banned in countires like Poland and Romania, but no one cares. I would be good if client would just recognise where the player is and just apply censorship accordingly.
They probably can’t even add an option to make the game show “the meany symbols” for players in countries where it’s legal because the devs are in a country where those symbols are illegal, but it would still be nice if they could come up with some sort of censored insignia.
It’s not like you could see the bad parts of the insignia even if they were there unless they were perfectly still you were a meter away from them, but I would like it if there would at least be something vaguely similar-looking filling that space on the uniform. I have even come up with some examples of censored and perfectly legal insignia that look good enough from far away.
A screenshot of a German soldier’s helmet from Post Scriptum. These few details makes World War 2 games seem more than just generic first person shooters. I will post my full review about the Closed Alpha soon.
There are games that do contain “forbidden” symbols, and that’s because they aren’t actually banned in most countries. What is forbidden is usage to propagate forbidden ideology. I don’t know single country that totally bans these symbols (it doesn’t mean there aren’t any, i just don’t know). There was Germany that noone wanted to deal with, but in 2018 they lifted the ban. I think it’s just a matter of playing it safe. No dev wants his game to be taken down in any country for reason of some dumb sophisticated cross. But for games like Enlisted, which are strictly about WWII history, it’s absurd that these symbols would be censored. Right now, in alpha state, it’s not that important with the campaign we can play. But in Berlin campaign for instance, like during the open playtest this spring, big red flags with iron cross in them look just dumb and unhistorical. It feels just like repainted T-34 playing german Tiger in a low-budget movie. However i don’t think we’ll see anything we’re talking about, just like in War Thunder.
War thunder actually censored noncommunist symbols and left some kind of huge, bad looking X instead (on some planes).
When I saw Berlin playtest official trailer, I was a bit hopeful, that this won´t happen to Enlisted. And then, the HUGE flags in the very first match I got thrown into made me cringe so hard. It was just awkward.
Either remove all those flags altogether (which I hope is the option that will not be taken into consideration, but at least such move would avoid same scenario on public), or please consider some ideas to bypass this awkwardness.
