Ive been playing Tunisia for a little while now and I’m just wondering if I should swap out my P-40 for the P-38 once I unlock it?

They reworked planes some time ago, and made the p40 one of the most potent fighter there is even as a starter plane. It’s even able to best the very last axis plane unlock thanks to It’s unGodly turn ability and shredding canons.
The p38 can merely zoom and boom. It’s not that good. You’d be better with the Spitfire for that, which is extremely quick… and also one (if not the) best fighter in game in terms of turning rate (with Japanese Zero in Pacific)
Note: those might dominate the skies, but their ground attack abilities are really sub par. They don’t have tiny bombs. It’s why it’s wise to keep the bomber plane in lineup when a tank is annoying you.

I was gonna say I’ve been able to take down multiple G.55s and as of more recently, Fw 190s in the P-40, it’s turn rate is useful to the point where even if a fighter is coming at you almost head on you can still out turn them. Do you know if it was actually this maneuverable irl? I know its a low altitude altitude fighter but that thing can turn on a dime.

I don’t know if it was like this irl… What I do know is that devs messed up air combat in Tunisia entirely with this rework. A fighter with such good values should not be an entry plane… able to best the very last axis unlocked fighter.
And wait, it gets better once you get your hands on a Spitfire. Flying this is enough that no other axis players will want to be in the air. (They’ll build many AA guns in spite instead 
)

Spitfire. All the way.
But I’m biased because the RCAF used those during ww2, many pilots on the Brit side were Canadians at some point (because due to casualties, Brits needed moar pilots). Thankfully, Can. ones were already well trained.
Then, the Japanese Zero. Which also has lil bomblets just good enough to explode tanks.

Both are great. I simplified my choice by using the gold order one.
The turn rate of it while max stars is just out of this world. Best in the game.
Exept maybe Moscow biplanes… but since most of those are piloted by new players… Could probably out turn them too.

But what you think about it’s top speed?
Not a deficit in dogfights against every axis fighter ?

It’s negligible. Yes, the Focke might have a better top speed/acceleration… But in game, not by a big margin. For the Focke to take advantage of it after a missed zoom and boom, it would need to almost exit the map (plane grey zone. quite far) for it to finally shake the Spitfire enough to have enough distance to turn without it catching him up. The messer also has decent speed, but definitely not enough to shake the Spitfire at all before it’s torn to shreds.
I use the gold Mk Vc. Found out that 4x 20mm is better to cripple planes (even with hispano) than 2x and 2x weak lmgs.
