Disclaimer: I am not saying that there were no sunny days in WW2, but some maps/battles are strongly ingrained with players from different games, movies and even documentary footage.
I agree, enlisted color palette is just sooo bright and happy, ain’t no way they’re going to redesign all the maps, but at least it would be cool to have some filter to make the game more grim, just like i did here (obviously an experienced graphic designer could make it even better than i did):
This is the kind of stuff that would make me want to play more. It’s an “uncanny” feeling when playing Enlisted right now for me. It looks great, but doesn’t feel right.
I think Moscow, Berlin and Rzhev campaigns are the best in terms of visuals – they convey Russian late fall/early winter and Berlin in May 1945 quite nicely.
Maps like Stalingrad and Moscow and to some extent Normandy do not take the effect of having cities on fire and all that particulate matter is in the air, blotting out any sunlight that may be had.
Such devastation would even perhaps have an effect on local weather patterns…
its very easy to change the colors, just takes a few hours of work for the graphics coder to implement automatic filters.
these filters need to be part of the games own calculations and not additional layers, as that heavily stresses the GPU and would annihilate fps.
every high quality game has graphic filter options, about time for enlisted to get them too, especially after the horrible recent fortnite graphics update.
I disagree. I like maps that are bright so one can see and its also just nicer. Eastern Front maps (understandably) are grey, bleak and dreary which doesnt make for a good experience.
Normandy used to be really dark with shadows and stuff but theyve fixed that and its one of the best things theyve done.
Many of the examples you give LOOK like a computer game. Enlisted is more realistic in my opinion (the clouds are done surprisingly well).
I also noticed how almost all of the examples you gave basically look the same. Variety across maps is a good thing. It would be annoying when every map looks like it’s night time.
I do agree with you for the Ardennes/Battle of the Bulge. I would suggest keep the current maps, but add a ‘winter’ option into the cycle so you could get the same map, but fully snow covered and maybe even with some mild blizzard effects as we see on Eastern Front maps.
Regarding Normandy, I’m surprised you’re complaining about the weather/colours. To me what needs to change is the D Day map. It is entirely fictional which is strange for something as specific as D Day and is a terrible map anyway. For example it is unnecessary hilly, which doesn’t interact well with characters or vehicles.
I would suggest the following. The picture of the perspective from the LCA looking at the houses is one of the most famous pictures from ‘D Day’ and was actually the first pictures the world saw of the Allied landings.
It is specifically of Canadians landing at Juno beach. I think Juno beach would be a desperately needed change from the way overused Omaha style, give recognition to the other participants of Overlord and would just be a better map. It’s also an opportunity to add Canadian squads/uniforms to the game (eg for Ross rifle)
While it would be a great improvement for the atmosphere and ambiance of the game, by itself (at least for my case) it would clearly not be enough. The biggest offender for me in term of immersion are by far the soldier voice lines that sound way to joyful for a second world war setting. I’m expecting Red Orchestra 2 tier of voice acting that truly set the tone for the rest of the game.
And Funnily enough one of the Japanese voice actor is the same one from rising storm. So that’s clearly a voice acting direction issue.
Stalingrad is no longer a town. By day it is an enormous cloud of burning, blinding smoke; it is a vast furnace lit by the reflection of the flames. And when night arrives, one of those scorching howling bleeding nights, the dogs plunge into the Volga and swim desperately to gain the other bank. The nights of Stalingrad are a terror for them. Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; onlymen endure. - Lieutenant Weiner of the 24th Panzer Division
Bros, I don’t think it was sunny in Stalingrad at this time…
