I was cleaning out a storage unit at my parents' house and found a strange Military Weebsowrd

It looks a lot like the sword available at Enlisted, is it the same one? To the untrained eye, it is not of very good quality and looks like it would break before it could cut someone, but the national permit makes it look like the real thing.

Possibile after the boshin war katana was mass produced for the army, so same model and style

well usually there are inscriptions on the hilt of the blade. you can try to remove the grip (seems easy) and see it yourself. if there are no inscriptions, it is probably mass produced one.

The inscription appears to be on the permit. It was written “kokuei” (國英).
I searched for this text in Japanese, but I don’t understand it well because I have no knowledge of swords…

it is usually mark of the maker, but could be anything.

If that’s read right-to-left (英國), then that’s ‘England’ in Chinese characters.

I asked my family about it, and it seems that the sword belonged to my family’s main family in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, and was converted into a military sword and brought over before World War II.
My family is a family of peasants, so perhaps it was made after the Boshin War.

It does not seem to be that valuable, but it is interesting that it still remains, so I will keep it in a safe place. (Just getting permission from the government is a hassle…)

They didn’t have enough bronze orders to fully upgrade it.

Good word :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:.It’s fun to find a lot of interesting stuff in old warehouses…(although you can find just as many snakes and insects).

I don’t know well about sword.
In principle, Japanese military sword manufactured at factory are not allowed to be owned and will be destroyed because it is not recognized for its historical and artistic value. So, it will not Japanese army’s official sword.
