On defense objectives it would be very useful if tanks could go hull down to be harder to hit by enemy tanks, but being far weaker to explosive packs, bombs or molotovs.
How I suggest it would work is that when all the terrain directly under the tank is diggable, the player controlling the squad with the driver can request hull down. While the request is active the tank becomes immobile, and anyone with a shovel can use the shovel on the tank to dig it into the terrain. Once the player toggles off the request, the tank needs to be shoveled back up in order to move again.
On larger tanks, it would make sense for only some of the hull to be buried, allowing engineers to build sandbags just under the cannon to absorb a few shots from enemy tanks. On smaller tanks, only the turret might be visible.
You could always do that manually but digging such trench would take to long to warrant the effort.
You also can’t un-dig the trench or dig underneath a parked tank.
I think it would be better to add premade positions to the map. This would be far faster to use but also a very obvious spot and essentially a bomb magnet.
Maybe both could work. Some maps could have pre-dug spots for tanks to use quickly as cover, while otherwise someone needs to bury the tank for them.
I dont think the infantry mains would love if the devs did such a change to a map to aid tank players.
Almost half of the replies on snowies thread more or less boiled down to nerf this tank spot and ruin this sightline because tank OP.
The fact that some maps should allow tanks to excel and do their job never crossed their mind as according to them every map should be as tank unfriendly as tractor plant is.
To be fair, tractor plant does have that one sightline where you can spawncamp the enemy tanks.
Infantry mains will bitch about everything that’s not AK-47 or AR15 and W+shift.
Also I expect those positions to work just like all premade stationary positions in every game ever: as bomb/bullet magnet. But they won’t care nor think about that, too “resource intensive” if you know what I mean.
But what is the point of spawning in a tank if you barely can support the objective/ deny the support in doing so? As a tank you really have to overextend yourself in order to get LOS on the inside of the plant itself. And if you do push infantry can easiely kill you.
I don’t really see what other things hull down could do except the CoH thing where they get a slight boost to their reload speed and traverse speed (presumably the driver and and hull machinegunner help out the gunner and loader?)
