How useful is spaced armour?

In Enlisted I’ve never really felt the benefit of the spaced on tanks. Can anyone attest to it being effective? Also, which nation’s spaced armour is better:

•Germany
OIP (1) (1)

Or

•Soviet
IS 2 Enlisted

Somewhat useful for explosive packs
The others seem to be of little use.

Good for AT Rifles. Not so effective against shape charges which is their entire point of being

Do you think the extra few mm of armour could help stop a tank round?

Almost certainly not. You’re talking about sheets of metal less than an inch thick. If it’s helping to stop a tank round that round was barely penning you and turning a dude or two orange to begin with. They were made for detonating shaped charges before it hit the main armor. Especially the Soviet one there

The net armour does almost nothing

It good against AP-HE like the tiger E can’t pen the side of the turret of the late is-2

Depends. The German spaced armor was designed mostly with anti-tank rifles in mind, and were more “official” than the Soviet spaced armor, which was more or less designed to counter panzerfausts. In game they don’t do much other than look nice - panzerfausts go through the Russian spaced armor anyway, and more more often than not you run into people with shaped charges weapons when playing the Germans.

the effectiveness of real spaced armour is very debatable, but the in game effectiveness is pretty much just the extra mm of armor that you see when going to the armor view setting for said vehicle - which usually isnt much, however it absolutely can make a difference.

There are a few tank guns that just barely penetrate its opponent, a few extra mm of armor could make the difference between life and death.

Also, one should consider that each mm of armor pretty much means you are allowed a few extra degrees of angle to still penetrate if you are attacking from a very extreme angle.

I run 3 Panzer III N in my set up: one Premium, one regular TT, and the Stalingrad with HEAT.
I do actually feel that my Stalingrad Panzer III N dies a bit faster to Bazooka fire because it doesn’t have side skirts.

The debate rages. In general, the German Schürzen were supposed to counter the AT rifles the Soviets were using, causing the round to tumble before reaching the hull limiting penetration. It is debatable if they worked, historically, and if they work in game, their effect is further limited by the fact that Soviets now pack Bazookas and Panzerfausts.

As for their effect on HEAT projectiles. It’s possible that the extra space granted will cause the jet to form more efficiently, and make them MORE deadly.

Of course, the random bits of metal welded to tanks probably did nothing beyond making the crew feel safer.

In game, I can say that the Panzer IIIN seems tougher than some tanks without the schürzen, but only slightly, and sometimes.

The German Schurzen awas fitted to protect from anti-tank rifles, not shaped charges.

The Soviet “bed spring” type was fitted against Pz-faust f’sure, and no one knows whether it was effective or not.

Shaped charges require stand off to be most effective, and these days that stand off is 2.5 - 3 times the projectile diameter - so Panzerfausts didn’t have nearly enough standoff and, as @Meatfraud also noted, detonating them further away from teh armour may have made them more effective rather than less!!

The smaller projectiles such as bazooka and Pzshrek and PIAT didn’t have enough stand off either.
