USAF 20th SPS Upper Heyford England 78 to 81.
I was in the USAF as a security specialist for a year before tearing up my knee and being medically discharged shortly before desert storm, so a vet I am not, but did some time. My sister did 24 years in the US Navy retiring as a Chief Petty officer. My oldest son was an A10 mechanic in the USAF.
2 years NJROTC in high school
French Mountain Troop for 5 years, wounded in service So Now I’m civilian
I enlisted to repair jets and my recruiter tricked me into being an SP. He was a liar. Most boring job ever.
3 years part time Territorial infantry a few decades ago - no wars to fight at the time, for which I am now very happy!
I went to two sessions of army cadets when I was about 14. Does that count?
What, a US Military recruiter lied? I actually enlisted as law enforcement, and when I finished with boot they changed my job to security specialist, to which I wasn’t happy as I found out they do more standing guard then anything law enforcement related. I was fighting with them about that and they were going to reverse it when I tore tendons in my left knee and got booted from the USAF. I actually fought with them about that as well since I had torn the same tendons playing HS football, and the USAF accused me of lying on my application and not putting that on my enlistment application…which was complete bullshit since I had a copy of my enlistment application
. So then they wanted me to sign an LON, letter of notification that I wanted to quit, to which I said no. So they said they were going to request that I be discharged, and I could file for a waiver if I wanted, but the waiver process takes six months, and during that time I had no job so I would be at the mercy of the Air Force for a job as they wouldn’t just let me sit and heal. I said fine, file the appeal for the waiver. The next day, someone picked me up to take me to a work detail and gave me a rake. I said WTF is this, and he said he would be back at 11 am to take me to lunch, but I was supposed to rake these parade grounds. I’m in a knee brace hobbling around, and they give me a rake. The next morning the same guy shows up and gives me a broom and drops me off at a HUGE parking lot and tells me he will be back at 11 to take me to lunch.
Anyway, after almost a week of this bullshit, I see the doctor who checks my knee out and says the swelling has got much worse, and I replied no shit, I am working harder now then I did at basic. He closed the door and said I’ll be honest, the USAF wants you to quit, and if you don’t this will be your life until your waiver goes through, at which time it will be overruled by a doctor who will be examining your knee. So, I had two choices, stay and do BS work for six months and see, or sign the LON and be on a plane home in two days. So, I signed.
This actually screwed me down the road though, since I went to college to be a US Marshall, and ran out of money so I joined thinking USAF law enforcement would help me after my tour was done. Then after being discharged, I applied to the Marshall’s, got an interview and drove 3 1/2 hours to Kansas City, and after waiting an hour in the waiting room got my interview. I went in, sat down and after the guy spent a few minutes looking at my application, and military records told me he was sorry, but he couldn’t hire me as a Marshall because of my knee. I said it was fine to which he said, “Well, if the Air Force” released you for it the Marshall’s don’t want to take a chance. So, that was my time in the military.
If it counts to you.
You were testing the water?
At age 18 I was rejected for mandatory militairy service (conscription) due to being just 1 mm over the body height limit
I wouldn’t fit in a plane, tank or uniform.
But 1 mm shorter, I would have fitted.
Right time frame, but otherwise seems irrelevant.
Im a huge military nerd, I have never fired a single round in my life tho and I will never join the Military even if a draft happens.
War is terrible and the most idiotic nonsense in this world.
I’m in the reserve so idk if it count but i did get military training even tho i only did that to escape conscription (aka draft)
holy shit, they really fucked you up real bad
It’s just the military. I’m retired now, so something that happened 40 years ago is not a big deal anymore, and looking back, things turned out decent. I got caught when the US was making cutbacks, so, any other time they would most likely kept me, but I am not bitter.
Does 3 months of participation in the civil war in 2014 count?
When I enlisted I weighed about 220 lbs, but for my height of 5’10" 189 lbs was the max I could weigh. I had 6 months till I was to leave for basic training. I wasn’t really fat, I played fullback in school weighing over 200 lbs, but my recruiter told me if I showed up at the MEPS center before I was supposed to go to boot over that they would reject me. So, I busted my ass off to get my weight down and the morning I went to the MEPS, I weighed 191 lbs. So I put on every sweat shirt I could find and ran till my weight was under 189, then didn’t eat or drink anything. I report to the MEPS center and step on a scale…190 lbs., I said oh shit, I’m over and the lady who weighed said they allowed a pound or two. So I had busted my ass that morning for nothing. However, I show up at basic and they weighed us again. My TI looked and saw I weighed 191 and said, “how’d you get in the AF you fat fuck”
So, I got the privilege of being a road guard when we marched, which meant every time we came to a road I had to sprint from the rear and relieve the front road guard so he could sprint back to the front. I would block traffic till the unit had crossed then sprint back to my position. The first few days of that every time I had to relieve the forward road guard the TI would yell, “run you fat fuck, traffic ain’t gonna stop itself, get your ass moving”.
Staff Sgt. Maher, what a fine TI I had.
Now I will have to say that the TI also called the front road guard fat fuck, so at least he was fair.
