How is the next soldier selected?

We have several soldiers in our squads.
Before spawning, we can select the soldier we want to use first.
When that one gets killed, we get another one until the squad is wiped out.
But how is the next soldier selected?
It doesnt seem to go from up (soldier 1) to the next below it and so on.
Is it random?
It seems I almost always get the soldier I dont need or want!
Got killed from closeby? I need a soldier with a weapon for close contact but noooooo I get the one for long distance.
Got killed from long distance? I need a soldier with a weapon for long distance but noooooo I get the one for close contact.
It even goes from the upper first soldier to the bottom last soldier while there are more alive in between.

You skip downed soldiers when you use Y to switch.

Wen you switch a dead soldier you get the one with more HP and in non combat situation

Makes sense…I thought the game was messing with me by always giving me a soldier with the opposite weapon that I need.

If you are quick enough you can choose the one you want, by clicking it then go before the system sticks you with the next available one that may no be the best one for the situation.
