Im trying to level up my SBD squad in Tunisia and I’m pretty bad at landing my bombs where I try and aim them, so I’m just looking for some advice on how far out from the objective I should drop my bombs?
There is a lot of variables, the SBD is capable of some pretty harsh dives, which would have drastically different bomb trajectory than just dropping them on a pass.
Here’s an example though if you want to try and copy the timing and dive angle here
I am not an expert of piloting the planes, but I believe it is the same approach for using radiomen and mortar teams. Try your best to be aware of where the enemy is at, or locations they will likely defend from. This will come through experience with the various maps.
and of course look for target markers. Especially those of enemy tanks since they are live markers.
I would generally advise that you should rather fly a few times in practice mode and try to find a way there to allow you to bomb accurately.
Look at the altitude, air speed and aim at a tank. Then check what the values roughly are when you destroy the tank and manage to pull up the plane.
What you are proposing to do is in my view the worst way to level the plane. Just dropping the bombs in the general direction of the enemy not only probably doesn’t bring any experience (=no level) but also occupies the bomber slot for the team unproductively (=likely to lose, less exp).
In general:
1.) Helps to know the map. If you know the enemy approach routes, that makes farming kills easier
2.) Look out for tracer / cannon fire
3.) Probably unpopular, but it’s better you just suicide bomb with decent number of kills rather than unproductively hog the bomber and crater the desert.
You are not wrong, but I wish there was a way to fix/balance that. Intentionally kamakazing your plane after firing everything off should not be the most effective strat.
Maybe there should implement a “return to base” incentive? Like a exit map area close to the resupply point that grants you extra points and lets you respawn into the next squad without actually dying.
I don’t think it is the most effective strat in general. I think it’s probably the most effective strat if you have low skill and don’t know what you are doing.
Of course there are situations where it does exactly what is needed, independent of skill level. But the most effective overall is relentless shuttle bombing from someone really who knows what they are doing.
But yeah agreed.
Anyone who finds this unpopular probaly thinks the 23 minutes they spent doing nothing in 1/2 hour match is fine because “look at all my points guys…I’m so useful!”
To any ‘pilot’ out there that seems to forget this in infantry game and there is a game you could go play to shoot and fly planes to your hearts content…
It’s not unskilled to use a plane to take out the grey zone tank switch to a squad and go cap the point.
Far more unskilled just to do 20 passes and still lose the game cause you can’t get out of your seat and help cap a point.
I have never met a ‘skilled’ pilot I couldn’t smoke out of the sky in 2-3 hits with AA and then usually this dedicated pilot players after I shoot 2-3 of their planes back to back to back down just abandon the matches.
I love having smart pilots that do the job the plane needs to do of killing unreachable grey zone tanks then get back to winning matches as infantry.
This “I’m a pilot!” mentality is bad for this game, people need to push or defend the point not spend the game 3000m away from it rearming and then complain “why isn’t anyone pushing/defending the point!”.
I recommend starting with a Stuka. It’s a dive bomber and you get really good at aiming at different diving angles with that thing because it’s made for pulling up late. I’ll often go at a complete 90 degree angle and make it out no problem. And worst case scenario, if you accidentally kamikaze, then you’re only taking two points off of your team (one, if you eschew the tail-gunner)
It really all depends on trajectory and speed. If you use a dive-bomber and you have multiple bombs, you can even learn how to get a good spread by dropping one while diving and the second just as you start pulling up
There are various factores you have to consider.
The speed your plane is traveling.
The angle of Atack
And the height you drop your bombs.
The best tactic is to dive at a 45 ish angle, and then the sight cover the target you wanna bomb at around 100 elevation, drop the bombs and pitch up.
If you fly at a more horizontal Atack, the bombs will travel or be dropped with the flow of your plane speed and drop rate.
Best practice is to go into practice, and drop a few dozen of them at a tank as a target, then judge and apply said knowledge into batle.
The suicide aproach, it’s only viable on slow planes and certain maps where the resupply point is just far. And never, suicide run right away or you will have a 20 sec spawn penalty, just practice your bomb runs, and suicide with esc - suicide after 5 seconds you dropped the bomb. And you will be fine without a penalty.
If you keep suicide bomb right away, you will never learn.
After a few dozen of batles, will be second nature and you adapt quickly to every plane at every scenario.
I would tho, advice to start with planes like stuka. They are the best to learn.
