How can I improve with planes?

I’m trying to improve with planes. I kind of got the basics of dogfighting down (tough it’s still very difficult for me to find any planes while flying fighters despite the fact that there are planes constantly wiping my team every minute or so) but I’d like to learn more about bombing. I want to move away from relying on bs rockets to help my team with CAS but it’s really difficult. Also rockets can’t really kill tanks, while a single well placed bomb can kill any tank. I was really happy to see the new pilot tutorial because I was hoping for some tips or tricks to start on this journey but it’s literally just “practice makes perfect”. Thanks!

Anyways, I’d love to find resources to improve. If anyone can link me or point me to the right direction I’d appretiate it a lot!

Aiming ahead of the lead indicator is a good tip since it loves to lie a bit

Play war thunder is better for learn how fly with this type of veichle simulation

I’m not the best bomber ace, but sometimes I manage to be quite useful for my team. I try to give some hints, I hope some of them will help you!

I mostly fly the Il-2 in Moscow, but maybe these hints work for other planes too.

  • Locating the enemy
In most cases searching around the cap point is worthy. If the enemy is attacking look for a building or group of trees, bushes about 30-50 meters from the cap area toward the enemy. Chances are good that there is an enemy rally point to launch their attacks.
Another hint is to spot tracer rounds: if there is visible heavy gunfire coming from a forest patch toward friendly positions there must be some enemies.

Target marks by friendlies can be misleading: maybe your comrade marked just on single sniper, and it’s not worth to waste your bomb load for a single kill. When I’m on the ground and I see multiple enemy soldiers I put three marks close to each other in the general area - signalling that there are multiple targets to hit for tanks and airforce.

I also frequently use the “ask / show enemy positions!” message from the chat wheel. I send this message when I on road to the target area, and about 2000m from it. (Usually when I turn back from the ammo-reload point.) It gives enough time for your team to mark targets, and marks placed this time won’t disappear until you get there! OK, it’s quite common that your mates too busy to mark targets for you but sometimes you get usefull targets.

Approaching your target
By default you fly head-to-head towards the enemy attack direction. Many of them uses covers. If you release your load from head-to-head position the covers could protect them from your attack.
So after an ammo-reload it’s not a bad idea to pass beside your target about a couple hundred meters, leave them behind about 1000-1500 meters then turn around and get them from behind!

This approach has many positives: you can kill whole squads “parked” behind a building while its player is forward in combat. Most tanks are headed for action so if you get around them you can attack their rear side, their engine compartment. Armor is much more vulnerable here than their front armor. You can kill Pz.IIs even with your 20mm cannon with some lucky aiming.

Honestly I don’t have the patience every time to go around them but its really worth to plan your entry direction rather than just fly straight toward the enemy.

I also use my guns too: start to strafe your target area from about 800mm. You can add some light rudder movement too to spray a larger area. You can get a lucky extra kill or two this way.

With the Il-2 I usually make two passes with one ammo load. At first I release the half of the rockets from couple hundred meters and when I’m very close to the target - but before I reach it! - I release half of the bombs too. At bomb release I go very low, almost scratching the roof-tops and trees. Go around and on the other pass you fire the rest of your ammo.
With some luck some enemy squads will spawn or arrive during the time your two passes. Or you spot a different target during your first low pass and you can attack that with your second strike!

With the Il-2 I usually fly at about 800m. Most enemies are flying lower than this, so you will get height advantage against them. When a Stuka or a Henschel biplane attacks you wait until it bleeds its speed trying to point its nose towards you from below. When he is slow you dive onto him with high speed. If you see a Bf 109 start to pray.

That’s all, I hope it helps. Blue skies and good luck for you!

Play warthunder my guy best way to learn I played it for like 4 years straight and don’t waste you’re time with regular guns once you expend you’re payload go re-arm and all rockets will kill a tank if you hit them m8s will especially same with havars

I mainly fly the P-51 D, so I will be speaking from that perspective. However, much of what I say is applicable to most American planes like the P-38 and P-40.

Firstly, know your plane. For the P-51, I know I can outrun every German plane in Normandy, have slightly better maneuverability than the Fw 190 but don’t quite have the climb rate of the Bf 109. From this, I adopt hit and run tactics, where I wait for an enemy plane do a ground attack or start chasing the other plane, then fly in at an angle and just hose the plane down. If I get a bogey on my 6, I know that I can’t out fly him, and get on his tail, so I dive away and try to get him to waste his ammo. When the enemy pilot breaks off because I’m too far away, to chase the other plane or ran out of ammo, I turn around and chase him. For most planes, staying on an enemies tail is easy enough because even with the G and blackout reduction perks, getting the dark screen is a very common occurrence with any sort high G maneuvers. Thus, learn your plane, and know what advantages you can use to get on your enemies tail. Also, learn how your particular set of guns works. For most American planes which tend to have .50 cals. the best tactic typically just hose rounds into your enemies at point blank until they die. However, for something 37mm like the P-63 in Berlin or the Bf 110 in Normandy, you need to be precise with your shots but you can afford to shoot from a bit further away.

Secondly, learn the maps. Relying your teammates for marks is not always the most reliable way of securing kills. Instead, learn where your enemies spawn, what paths they like to take to get to the point and where they like to camp. In addition to this watch for the muzzle flashes of tanks, as it is the biggest giveaway of the position of a tank. Going for open top objectives is also viable.

Finally, learn your faction’s strengths and weaknesses, and adjust how you play from there. For Normandy Allies, I know that the infantry equipment we have excels at fighting in close quarters, but is lackluster at mid to long range. Thus, it is the role of CAS to cover the ground forces as they close the distance so that they can make use of their advantage in CQC. Therfore, it may be more tactically advantageous to put my bombs just before the point to eliminate any defender who is trying to push through our rank and slow the advance as opposed to just behind the point where yes, I will net more kills but, leave the infantry more problems in the immediate. Tanks in the grey zone are also always very important to deal with as you are the only person who can deal with them immediately. Basically, be a team player, learn to prioritize targets and understand your faction so that you can compliment it.

although i am not best pilot, i like playing ju 188 with its 1500kg payload.

to improve best is to know the maps from enemy side. that way you know enemies avenues of approach towards cap and likely rally positions (if there is actually player who puts them in enemy team). if enemy is aggressive then just bomb around cap and towards where enemies are most likely spawning. if enemy is passive rely more on ally markers (although sometimes they are sketchy) and bomb further away from cap positions.

also what i learned in urban combat… avenues of approach are important. if you dont have right lane for bombing, your bombs will hit buildings and you will kill no one. choosing to turn right or left on rearming point is first important choice. second is properly aligning with streets for maximum effectiveness.

also be on the lookout for big flashes on the ground for tanks. they are not always tagged so you will need to learn to spot them and bomb them if you have right approach. and dont try to change your course at last second…

also there are few youtubers who put planes gameplay so you can learn aiming from there.

My issue with planes is that you have a chance to hit several targets every time you reload but it takes a few minutes between reloading and bombing so if you miss or only manage to hit a couple of targets your contribute to the team is pretty redundant compared for example with shelling artilary every 1 or 2 min.
It’s just borderline effective if you consistatly hit a decent amount of targets. Otherwise you are simply denying another tank to be on battlefield .
Only time I use planes is to shoot down effective bombers on the other team and then come back to the ground planting waypoints, ammo boxes and cover which most of you lot don’t do.

And don’t even start me on using fighters to counter bombers.

Use the top of the nose of your airplane. It is a good indicator. If the tank is on top of the nose, drop the bombs, they usually will fall directly in front of him or directly on him. Works for me 90% of the time.

They really can.

Piggybacking off this thread, how do I find planes in the sky?
Happens quite often: I get killed on the ground by a plane, respawn in a plane myself to go and revenge, and I just can’t find the enemy plane anywhere: what do I do?
Do I put on my headphones and tryhard-listen to enemy engine? Do I circle around and hope to see some signs of the plane? Do I have to learn enemy resupply point locations?

All three of what you said, also watch the kill feed to make sure the enemy did not suicide.

Rockets are literally better at killing tanks than bombs 80% of the times…
