How can I "get good" compensating for subpar shooting skills?

TLDR: I apparently can’t keep up with the average skill bar in terms of reflexes, quick reaction and precise firing. So I’m genuinely interested in learning ways that can improve my battle proficiency (and thus XP progress) without necessarily requiring peak performance point-and-click skills, which ultimately I’ve accepted I can’t achieve. (Age isn’t on my side either.)

I don’t really want to throw in terms like tryharders and nolifers, but it is super frustrating for a non-hardcore FPS player stepping in and realizing that, despite your efforts, everyone and their dogs will consistently kill you on the spot within milliseconds after visual contact, which implies thousands of hours spent playing competitive online FPS.

Then going on forums and seeing guys talking about matches worth hundreds of kills and tens of thousands XP as they were the norm - flash news: those are NOT the norm for normal players.

I don’t think I’ll ever be “good” at the game in terms of raw point and click skill, so I want to find a way to at least partially fill the skill gap / improve XP gains by compensating with tactics and strategy.

Example: I’ll gladly play support roles, like being the engineer that sneaks in and builds a rally point / ammo crate in an advantageous position (but that doesn’t seem to provide personal rewards so far); I’m more than willing to be the radio guy spamming arty; I’ll take any chance I get to man an MG nest and mow down a wave of assaulters. How else can I be proficient in battle, if shooting skills aren’t up to par, and rushing into the fight for cap zones is a death sentence for me and free frags for the enemy?

Puh learn by doing ^^ if u play the game you get better

No one bothers with Engineers and majority of over 100 kills is made with either planes, tanks or with mortar and artillery!

You can do it with guns to but its harder ^^

The devs have stated that they are working toward more exp point rewards for support roles, so hang tight

I feel you though, I usually end up top 30% of my team but some games I focus on just “playing” and building bases for the defense of points, and end up sacrificing level-ups.

Take your time, hang back from the fray and pick off clueless bots. For some reason most people in this game start out in a frenzy even though there is no match timer, and the game only ends once tickets are depleted. There should be more incentive for teams to not rush forward unto death.

Don’t be afraid to hip fire even with a bolt action or better yet, get the knife out. It’s pretty much a 1 hit kill with a knife, especially from behind. If you can get in behind and nab the AI soldiers before the player sees you, you can squad wipe em.

Get good at tanks and planes. Those the best support roles you can play. A good tanker or pilot can change the entire battle and will get you at the top of the board quickly

well, " experience is the best teacher. "

as such, if you have issues with reflexes, i suggest you engage from distance.

don’t worry, we all started from somewhere.

i remember being a duck with a rifle that barely managed to get some kills. but now, i can somewhat consider my self quite good and veteran at this game.

one thing that i would like to spend some words are;

don’t play for kills. enlisted was not born, and never ment to be competitive. play for fun. play for objective.

as the devs said, the main focus are not kills. yes, they can help to archieve the victory, but it’s not the primary concern.

well, enlisted has also tanks and vehicles. as such, you can have your fun there.

( but to play with only vehicles, you will have buy premium for 1 month, and than buy the additional slots(2/3). so that you will be able to include more vehicles in your line up.

well, devs talked about rewarding better if you build ammo, sandbags, spotting and yada yada yada. just a matter of time

on a personal level, well, it’s a bit sad that doesn’t satisfy your desires. although, don’t forget that you are playing a great and major role. not many people say this, but they are very greatfull towards supporter players. and we will never have enough of people that support in a game especially free to play.

another tip, learn the map. take your time to explore it. might help you and save time for the next times.

you have to think that we are playing a free to play in the most heated areas of history. as such, this whole game can be a meat grind because of the objective. nontheless, throw back grenades, recognizing and make certain enemies a priority.

another way to have fun and be effective, be coordinated with a friend/s.

that’s all, but don’t forget to play for fun ^^.

that’s all from me. cheers.

LMGs at long range are underused and don’t require precision.

Learn like the rest of us did.

Go die, then die again, and again, and again, over and over and over and over. You will learn eventually.

None of us achieved near-instant reaction times overnight.

No amount of tactics and strategy will make up for that. The only thing that will fill the gap is you improving. All the tactics and strategies you can use, we already use them. And we use them better and faster through sheer experience, practice and repetition. Some tactics you can’t even use because you don’t have the reflexes necessary for it, we do.

There isn’t really much I can tell you. Pick an LMG, go prone from a distance and shoot, they’re comically easy and have laser accuracy, pretty much anyone can use them. Tanks are more slow-paced but still require a decent chunk of knowledge to avoid getting ran over by infantry and planes. You can try those, or planes.

Planes are 50-50, infantry can and does shoot you down often, but you can also damage them badly, they’re more luck than anything.

There’s a game called KovaaK 2.0 that I used to obtain finesse and precision when it comes to aiming, it’s on steam, quite good. It’s designed specifically for that. Try it, takes a lot of time and commitment though.

No no, you misunderstand. We’re not running to our death, the enemy is already dead, they just missed the memo. We’re running to get some exercise in.

Try again, fail. Try again, fail. Try again until you are met with success. The best teacher is experience you can gain by learning from your mistakes, there is no other way around it. Also map knowledge helps a lot. As much as I would like to give you good universal advice, it is not possible because there isn´t any. If you lack reflexes needed for close range engagements, try to start with snipers or engaging from distance with action bolts. Supporting your teammates by using tank correctly (standing behind protection of your infantry and providing support) also helps for starters. (not to mention you are going to make glorified Rambos cry whole rivers)

Also that… find nice position (even if it is on the floor), mount your LMG and farm easy kills.

There is some good value in getting spawn points behind points and spawn there with large squads of riflemen. Get your squad in a good position with cover on a flank nets quite a lot of kills on the enitre squad and will stop the spawnwaves. This makes the job of the assaulters easier. This is my preffered way of playing when its late and my aim is getting less or my focus is not completely there. You can still get a top 3 playing just that strategy.

When you hover over a point you can send your squad to attack a point with X no matter the range. If you do that you can move in together with your squad and they are on a hair trigger shooting wise. This makes it hard to spot you as a player and gives you a higher chance of succes and more kills.

Playing tank and or plane needs xp at first because the cooler toys come later in the line. (at least for me the first ones where not that interesting) Those are good fun to play and net quite a good ammount of kills but still require you to get good at them, thats tactics and oversight though not aim skill.

I found playing mid range pushing slowly with a squad of lmg gunners quite satisfying as well. Takes some aim skill but less so then in the thick of it and also less then the long range sniping.

This is my first shooter I picked up in years that can hold my interest long enough to get good at it again. First few matches I was happy that there where no destructible buildings otherwise the roof would collapse on me trough ammount of bullets in it. After 50 hours I noticed that my old shooter skills where comming back and I could messure myself again with anyone I met. I just rushed in and died for 50 hours straight and found that there where still some good reflexes left and die way less now doing so.

Give anything you like a good trial and error and you will get somewhere points wise

As a veteran FPS gamer with the likes of Red Orchestra 2, Insurgency and some other FPS games on my resume(not Esports type btw), fighting at close range with a rifle is a hard task even if you have something like an SVT. You could try to learn when to use a grenade or an explosive charge like if my squad only has a trooper with a bolt action left but still has an explosive charge or grenade and there’s a large group of enemies near you, you can cook a grenade or explosive charge then blow yourself up with those enemies.

I understand when seeing other videos on youtube where other people do play slower in general even with SMG or someone having a large backpack with 4 medkits while I only use 1 because I would rather have something like a large pouch for SMGs considering the PPD’s rate of fire being a bullet hose due to I’m so used to getting one shot elsewhere that having more than 1 medkit is not practical. Its like not everyone is a battle hardened Stalingrad veteran from a Soviet Guards Army who is so used to fighting at close ranges as others are just regular soldiers who were only trained with rifles.

I would appreciate a good support role like tanks or planes that would make my job easier considering how hard it is for my engineer to stay alive to build a forward spawn sometimes due to I was so busy storming enemy positions with a PPD like I used to do with the PPSh in RO2. Friendly engineers building spawns for me are also well appreciated especially those that are better than mine even though I always have an engineer on my best squads incase I need to build one.

Thanks for the practical tips, some of which I already figured out and try to follow;

This one I hadn’t thought of, I’ll definitely try it.

To those suggesting LMGs: I WOULD and I’m definitely looking forward to it, except due to mediocre average results I haven’t unlocked any yet.

To those saying “go on and die your way through until you eventually get good”: I’m definitely going to die my way through, but at the same time I wouldn’t mind having some fun here and there on the way. Also because the point is supposed to be getting good to have fun, not for the sake of it.

A subpar shooter here. I’ve one tip and that’s to pick sniper squads on more open maps where you can put range to advantage.Find a good spot to set up camp, preferably somewhere where you can get flanking LoS to spot where enemy mostly hunkers down. Aim and fire slow and steady, get a hang on how much you need to lead.

Every now and then try to quickly hit a runner. Has been doing wonders on my aim.

Since it hasn’t been mentioned, I’d take a look at hardware. I do a lot better when I’m at my at home with the whole setup I have there than when I play on my laptop. A better monitor makes enemies easier to spot while a better mouse makes them easier to kill.

Shrug - I’m the same - have gotten better but I’m old and at the end of a high ping pipeline, plus this is the first FPS I’ve played in 20 yrs (and not much of them back then either) so all the controls are new to me - just do your best and enjoy those things that do go your way!

Eh, this makes sense, I already try to do that in my attempts. It’s good for training and “relaxed” gameplay, unfortunately that appears to be unrewarding in terms of progression.

Low ammo supply and bullets dispersion add up to aiming issues, keeping the overall kill count low, and this coupled with being far from the action ends up with poor score and abysmal XP at the end of the match.

I’m looking forward to equip my snipers with upgraded / better weapons and above all large ammo pouches, but the former require leveling up the squad for disassembling /upgrade efficiency, while the latter require reaching late campaign levels, so for now I’m stuck with small pouches and basic sniper rifles with moderate upgrades.

Might as well try that. My rig is a 17" MSI laptop, and I need portability so not much room for upgrades, but I’ll consider looking for a better mouse.
