Yes, that’s what I’m asking for, a source for the stuart using it during the war.
This is such a quality comment, It’s really rare to see someone with a brain
they were 100% used by the M5 Stuarts M6 gun and also by other 37mm guns like the M3 Anti-Tank gun
I’m not trying to be an ass, I’m actually asking for a source because this is the first I’ve heard about it and searching for it has yielded nothing for me.
You can probably find 10 sources with one quick Google. It was pretty common for the 37mm to carry canister rounds
I just said I tried and couldn’t find a single mention of it
I remember reading The Pacific and they talked about slapping Japs with 37mm canister rounds and how it left the ground painted in gore.
That’s not a source, but when I fucking looked it up all I got was CoH2 bullshit so I’m not gonna bother
I mean I found sources on British 57mms and American artillery and towed AT using it, but not american tanks.
literally 1min:
Canister Canister M2 1.58 / 0.88 122 steel balls 762 / 752
shipping manifest from USA to Brittain to supply M2 Canister rounds for the M3 stuarts and Grants in service there: HyperWar: Lend-Lease Shipments, World War II (Ordnance)
“literally one minute” to find a non source then edit the post later with a real source, no need to be dramatic.
1 min to find a non-primary source that the gun used in the stuart had M2 Canister rounds, then 5 min to find a primary source with quantities of it being imported to Brittain for use in their Stuarts.
The first one isn’t necessarily proof because it doesn’t demonstrate it as a tank load, just that the towed guns had it as some point during its entire operational history.
USA used basically all rounds universally between towed or vehicle mounted guns.
So if the round existed, there would be a very high chance it would be available to use for the tankers.
Seems like some rounds, cannister especially, would be in much higher need for one as opposed to others.
But regardless that’s the source I was looking for.
There are accounts of cannister being used in Europe - this is taken from another game forum from 1999… 37mm Canister in? - Combat Mission Archive #1 (1999) - Battlefront.com Community
Apparently there’s a report comparing US and Heer equipment from WW2 that singles out the 37mm, and specifically cannister, as being “a major failing” - this evaluation is paraphrase coming from another forum site so I have no idea what the actual report says:
At the same time we have books mentioning the sherman is a death trap, despite having one of the best mortality rates among WW2 tanks. Not a fan of old books as sources.
Depends on who made the report and what they were claiming really.
Death Traps was written by some stolen valor loser, but if there was an actual war department analysis of it, it’s kindof relevant.
That was the perception of them by their crews - the fact that every other tank was JUST AS BAD OR WORSE isn’t actually an argument against it!
Actual military analysis/opinion of the time said that Shermans were worse than German tanks 1:1, and gave credit for numbers and willingness to take losses maneuvering for their successes - you can read as much in the White’s report mentioned above - here’s a partial extract - sorry it’s a bit hard to read - best I could do:
the author claimed they were fighting Panthers and Tigers all the time which official reports said his unit never saw.
