i remember heroes and generals
trying to hit infantry with the wing
that could count as melee. 
If sufficiente another player melee kill one of the enemy already downed of half killed by you for get the awards, so yes uou dont need exit the plane

i know… i just find it funny 
Te reason is probably that the enemy pilot suicided from the menu after being hit, counting the melee based death as your kill.
nah… i just downed players with rockets and someone else finished them in melee…
