7+1 magazine only came around in the 60s, at first as a custom job by GIs in Vietnam, then later as a factory option.
Unfortunately, the Ithaca only had a 4 round magazine at the time.

You could load one in the chamber, making it 4+1
Well, technically… you can load 4, rack the gun, then load another. I’m 99% sure it’s not possible to actually load one in the chamber. But basically, yes, you can load one in the chamber. Same applies to all shotguns which apparently are completely unaffected by the +1 mechanic closed bolt guns have.
