Fix the AI

Ok so part of the core concept, according to the devs, is to control a squad of soldiers…but we are limited to using them as empty vessels to possess at will for extra lives.

The AI needs to be removed or fixed. I personally dont want to see this unique mechanic removed and doubt it will since its a gimmick to create more grind but as it is now its a burden that doesnt function as intended in terms of player expectations.

Not only are we constantly tasked with babysitting a bunch of mental incompetents but the orders we can give them are very limited. And on top of this, they cant hit anything so theyre not even usable as static sentries.

Imo this is what needs to happen:

-AI need to be able to shoot in the direction of targets more often, their bad accuracy is fine as long as they keep shooting. When you put the AI in a car they just go ham, guns blazing. They should do this all the time within close/medium range

-more commands, AI should be able to be ordered to: man gun emplacements (MGs, AA, AT), dig trenches, lay down suppressing fire, fire mortars at and drive vehicles to a map ping, heal allies (loading tips say medics do this automatically but Ive never seen it tbh), and in the future they should automatically fire hull turrets on tanks and fly planes straight while the player uses the tailgun.

-AI needs general improvements but mostly they need to take cover way better. They should NEVER surround cover and should always put something between themselves and enemies they see > player pings > enemy spawn in descending order. And for the love of god make them get in the fucking trenches. PLEASE.

If these changes were implemented and continually improved I think the game could turn into something really unique. We should be able to amass kills without firing our guns personally, just by commanding our squads into advantageous positions.

I just dont see the point in the squads the way they’re currently implemented and they’re more of a hindrance than an asset.

Is there any word on anything planned for the AI? When was the last time there was significant improvement beyond tweaking their accuracy, sight range or aggression?

Not that long ago, they can now lie down on the ground and shoot at you. When i play in the middle of the night against only bots i can see them get more smart and reactive with each death, when i was killing them from the front, then they started moving from the side and when i blocked them with barbed wire they flanked objective from the back, so there are some ai levels it’s a shame they only seem to spawn them at the absolute lowest ai level in 98% of the matches.
They really should be able to spawn in a tanks equal to tanks of your own, they should be able to build AT guns, use snipers, build ammo boxes for players that are calling for them, build obstacles around point and more, now they are kinda predictable even if they suddenly lvl up in the intelligence they only can move through around 3-4 preprogrammed paths created with nav mesh.
In the Test server people are saying bots have more smooth movement now. But reaction is the same nerfed reaction that we had where they made them stop to shoot at the tank commanders from across the map. Bots only seem to react to the sound and not really to what they see. They were supposed to be machine learning bots and yet they behave worse than cod1, fear, stalker, hl1/2, l4d and dota 2 ai.

I played in the test server and they seemed rather more competent there? So I’m not sure, maybe placebo.

I think AI is next big focus after they get core game mechanics sorted.

It would be nice if they let people know what the plan was. I have a feeling theres something like actually broken in their programming.

Yeah basically making this game like ARMA…that game has EVERY SINGLE THING you mentioned…
it’s, tho, a MIL SIM and not an ARCADE FPS

What you suggest it’s fair, AI here is among the most stupid I have ever seen in my life, literally can’t see a dumber ai, maybe in some 1997 games, but some of the things you said are a programming nightmare, example

digging trenches…you should have shovels, open map, set a trajectory…

having AI firing mortars…shouldn’t be that bad but to make it functional you should set a salvo rate, choose shell type, thats a lot…programming nightmare too…always, open map, fire at position…i believe it requires a new map UI system if that would be the path to be taken…

I personally would focus on the most important thing…firing in the right direction…

They’re dumb as hell, enemy is where you ping and they keep looking at your shoulders…it’s crazy bad we all know but development seems either dead or dead slow…

And…i really need AI piloted planes…like in WT…jsut plain straight fly…while you use the turret…because, we know, they just can’t shoot…

Ai is a bloody mess…unbearable at times…

Could just be the same system as the radio operator but you can choose each mortar’s target individually (or just spam one spot) and the option to switch to smoke. Might be a little redundant but I think it would work .

But yeah first priority, Id just like them to shoot more. Shoot at enemies, shoot at me, fucking shoot randomly and they might hit something idc as long as they’re trying.

Thats a good idea, with a circle surrounded by a grey area which represents the mortar range

This is impossible! did you see how do your AI shoots a rifle? do you think they’d be able to get a specific target? maybe in the next 50 years of development, and im being optimistic…

Yep thats the real issue…

One last thing…it’s tactical to recalibrate the range every 2 or 3 shots to spread splash damage on a larger area

Idk if you have just realized what youre asking for…or if you have a bare idea of what it means all of that in a practical sense…
Enlisted it’s a pretty basic yet modern game…
Nothing is wrong in dreaming or asking, just don’t expect too much

this is absolutely reasonable…as the function is there already, and it’s intended to work, but it doesn’t.
Seems like they need your supervision to ensure the success when you issue the “build” command.

idc about that. You are talking about actual Artificial Intelligence/neural network type of behaviour. That takes A LOT of space…Game is ~39GB, mostly textures, maps and models.
I don’t think there is realistically space in that folder to contain machine learning software…

Nope i want combat to be less predicable and fun, sp games are fun because ai can do many interesting things with their scripts and you need to overcome that challenge to progress in the story. Enlisted should be the same minus the story which is replaced with grind.

Why would game need to contain ML software if they will be putting there only already pre trained model which shouldn’t take more than a few gigs. You are clueless about ML and AI, i will gladly sacrifice 5 more gigs for much superior ai that going to behave similar to human player.

AI had several changes you could notice in the test server, the most noticeable one being that they could climb ladders.
There is always work being done on them, and if you notice any obvious pathfinding issues make a report on the CBR.

I mean, if they could queue for me and also grind that would be great. I had a bot like that back in Diablo 2, Id just watch it find loot for me for hours…It was actually the most fun I had playing D2 lol…but that was probably a few factors less complex than this game lol

It took Bethesda over 20 years to implement that feature (not just for the ai but your character) so you could always be 100x more incompetent. PS recent game called Lies of P doesn’t let ai to climb ladders, so those ladders seem to be incredibly hard to implement for a lot of devs.

I would also enjoy if they made the bot profiles historically accurate. Currently we can see players and bots running around with avt 40s, fg42s and m2 carbines. Giving bots more ba rifles and less select fires/prototypes would atleast make my custom games more historically accurate.

and also fix AI ADHD, very often its hard to even hit them, they run and stop a lot, they spin they jump backwards it’s just awful

players are much more predictible with their movement, playing lonefighters is so much better because of it

Yeah its often way easier to hit a player than a bot because players dont randomly stop or run in the opposite direction suddenly. Its frustrating and breaks immersion…but tbh you can use the same strategy to avoid being hit too which is funny.
