Fire Rates: A Discussion

Wrong rate of fire is the most imersion breaking aspect of a gun in video games.

So MG42 has 900 rpm instead of its real 1200 rpm - thats a 300 rpm decrease.

Imagine you would give MP40 a 300 rpm increase, 800 rpm would be laughably fast.

Every gun should have its correct rate of fire - and only after that should guns be tweaked so that they perform as strong as desired - which shouldn’t be terribly difficult to do considering that we even have BRs.

The MG 42 actually does have a fire rate of anywhere from 900-1500 rpm depending on the bolt. The standard MG 42 in game has a rate of fire of 900 stock and 990 when upgraded, and the MG 42 Early has a rate of fire of 1060 rpm, so to say that the fire rate is too low isn’t really accurate. It’s not really the standard, but it is a realistic rate of fire for an MG 42 with a heavier bolt.

My bigger issue is with guns like the AVS-36 which has a fire rate in game of 600 stock and 660 upgraded, when in real life it has a fire rate of 800 rpm, and the AVT-40 with the same fire rate when it should be around 750. These weapons were never issued with any other bolt weights, and the fire rate is still lower than it should be. Then on the other end, you have things like the ZB-26 with a fire rate of 750 rpm, when it should be much lower at 500 rpm.

Differences around 100 rpm aren’t a big issue, when it starts to be a problem imo is when you have weapons that fire over 200rpm faster or slower than they should. For example, the ZB-26 in game has a fire rate of 750 when it should be way lower at 500. When it’s that big of a difference you can really tell that it’s not historically accurate and it starts to detract from the feel of the realism of the game, especially when you fully upgrade the weapon and the fire rate climbs even higher. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum you have stuff like the AVS-36 that fires at 600 rpm when it should be more like 800rpm, although when something is too slow at stock it doesn’t feel as bad because once the weapon is fully upgraded it starts to get closer to what the rate of fire should be.

Well at least they have the IRL excuse of “heavier bolt” for the MG. The rest are just arbitrary numbers!

I would like to see it changed so all firearms start slightly below their IRL RoF, and then the upgrade “restores” them to their proper RoF via maintenance

Its still just an excuse, the standard infantry MG42 version of the MG had the 1200 rpm bolt in 90% of the cases, higher rate of fire was for planes, slower rate of fire was for vehicles - which was rare anyways since MG34 with its rotating barrel switch was mostly used for vehicles.

Long story short, there is zero reason why MG 42 should have its current RPM - with the exception of belt capacity which actually seems more like an issue than a buff - which again doesn’t matter considering that we got battle ratings.

900 is just non upgraded

I feel like this is the case for some weapons.

But there another factor that is really important is the speed of the bullets. Because it ridiculous that the speed of the thomspon bullets are under 290 meters per second

Not saying it’s justified. Just saying at least they have a historical excuse. Unlike all the rest

this is complicated discussion. lots of weapons had variable rate of fire depending on their configuration and type of ammo they used and that is why you often see different numbers in various sources. also some weapons have difference between early and late war versions of them.

so ingame weapon rate of fire might be mostly correct, just that they used source that used uncommon variant for some weapons.

Darkflow has its own, usually Russian sources that may indicate different fire rate than Wikipedia and western books, a good example is Fedorov that has 350-400 rpm according to Wikipedia and has 600 rpm in game based on some army manual or something.

Since fire rate is not written in the stone and is influenced by the condition of the gun, the ammunition, the bolt used ect… I think that actually both are probably correct.

give the m3 smg a higher rate so it can actually be used( considering it’s the US’s icon weapon)

And there is literally NO source that would claim the rate of fire of the ZB-26 would be anything close to 750. That’s an entire 50% increase from every source that I have read, and that kind of deviation cannot be caused simply because of the conditions of the weapon. Now I’ve seen sources saying that the ZB-30 had an increased fire rate of 550-650 rpm, but that has different bolt geometry and an adjustable gas system. AVT-40 seems realistic enough in game, AVS-36 does sound faster in your video though.
But as I said, DF has their own sources and they rarely back down.

Edited my comment to include the ZB-26, because that’s an even more ridiculous difference. The most annoying part about the ZB-26 in game is that the rate of fire increase is actually just a detriment, because it only has 20 round mags and it makes it way less controllable.

You should try writing a suggestion about fixing the guns one by one like I did with Király39 and 43M,
