Finally figured out how in the latest update you can order your engineers to build as you use a different troop (eng squad!).
Change interaction with buildings to a different button triangle on ps5…
Now you can set up multiple defences at the same time, I usually use them for mg nest or at gun and provide cover.

It has been in place for some time but it has definitely been improving over the last few updates.
But I completely agree, people underestimate how good the build order is. My issue is that if they are under fire, they get confused and cancel the order which can be annoying but if you get a good flank you can really get some things done quickly.
If you want to get good at managing your squadmates individually, I recommend the above set up as well. Quicker pace and moves a lot of controls closer for easier use
thats great until they blow off your order like you never said it and thers no good reason for them to do so
