I’ve got dual weapons on some of my assault guys, I’m becoming of the opinion that backpacks might be better due to quick healing potential. I’m not 100% sold onthe idea of dual weapons. I can see the point (maybe) if you’re a sniper. But for assault guys I usually forget I have a second weapon or just choose not to use it.
You can aim with the iron sight on most sniper rifles or use a pistol.
If all soldiers are allowed to carry grenade launchers, I will use dual weapons, otherwise it must be a backpack
I use backup weapons on my assaulters in normandy so I can switch to rifles for the occasions where my targets are at mid/long range and smgs wont do much. Helps that for germans the Kar98 is a pretty solid rifle as well. It means losing out on extra medkits, but if you get downed while rushing into an enclosed space, you probably aren’t getting back up regardless, so its not an enormous loss. Still a situational grab, though.
However, on basically every other class I think the backpack is going to always be the better option. It has a lot more flexibility than “Bring the same gun twice” or “Bring a basic rifle”, especially since you can just bring ammo bags.
im no expert, and have been wondering which to go for on a few occasions (esp since i just got the option on my sniper squad and will soon have it on my engineer squad) but i have the starter assault weapon and a toz shotgun on my assaulters (need to remember to use em in cqc but one step at a time)
Even with my premium squads, I dropped some of the given perks to take fast healing as its got me out of trouble so many times, and with 4 medpacks you can really stay in the fight.
I see no point in 2 weapons (unless radio man). If I picked a guy with a certain weapon it’s for a reason, I want more ammo or more healing to get the most out of that weapon.
Gonna say that from my experiance, the Toz-b just really isn’t worth it, even in close quarters. You only get two shots and its spread is such that it doesn’t really do much past point blank, yet it can still easily miss close in. Its generally better to just use the russian smgs, which are incredible, especially once you get the drum variant. Even with just what you start with, they can gun down 3-4 guys before running out of ammo, which the Toz-b just can’t.

it gets 12 in reserve and 2 loaded into the gun, same with the drilling since both are break action double barrel
Backpack. There are few or no occasions where I’ve really wished I had another weapon vs being happy to have more ammo for hte one I have, or more grenades of med kits.
All backpack, more TNT for tanks and crowded post.
First time I chose 2nd weapon for my Assaulters, its good to hv a mid-long range weapon, but later I found full upgraded SMGs are more than enough for mid range, especially the Thompson, so I change back to backpack.

Yet I don’t regret choosing 2nd weapon for my assaulter 1 team in Normandy US, since unlike Berlin and Moscow shotguns the Winchester is actually a viable CQC weapon, and it feels totally badass to storm into a building with it and simply blast away up to 6 guys in a row. Situational, but great fun.
Backpack slot for everyone else, tho.

If you like using Gren launcher, its good to hv a second weapon so no need to keep attach and detach the launcher
eh i would just fire off all 3 shots if you have the time so you can use it as a normal gun, but that’s how i used the 2 launchers i have still funny to counter snipe a sniper with a grenade launcher
Also, keep in mind that even in the 2nd slot, each soldier type is limited to carry either a weapon of its class, or a starter rifle. No such combo as semi auto + SMG is possible.
And furthermore, if you equip two weapons using the same ammo, they WON’T increase your total ammo reserve, but share the same pool.
Instead, combos like SMG + bolt action or Grease gun (.45) + Sten (9mm) will give you the normal ammo reserve for each weapon.
I used to have my Assaulters unlock the extre weapon slot for a bolt action, but I now believe that backpack is far bettter.
You can get the granade pouche. Having more than one granade when you need it, is probably one of the most crucial things you can have.
I have yet to find a real application for having a secondary over a backpack.
Maybe for snipers to hive them better CQB chance, but thats about it. And with that we have 3 Sniper squads, you can have it only on Sniper II and rest can have backpack with ammo or something else.
