I think that for machine gun nests there should be different ones depending on the battle rating, similar to the system for high and low BR anti-tank guns. For the Soviets the PM1910 maxim could be the low BR MG nest, and the SG-43 Goryunov could be added has a high BR MG. For the Germans the MG34 could be low BR, and an MG42 could be high BR. For America the existing M1919 could be high BR, and the M1917 could be added for low BR. For Japan the 7.7mm Type 92 can be the high BR MG, and the similar Type 3 in 6.5mm could be the low BR MG.
I think this would help make the game more realistic and make MG nests more fun to use. Also, a barrel changing animation or an animation for topping up the water tank in water-cooled guns could be added when an MG overheats to improve the realistic feel even more.
I would argue this isn’t really true. The MG34 may have the best fire rate of the MG nests, but it also overheats the fastest. In my experience, I the MG nest that I have had the most success with is actually the Japanese Type 92. Despite having the lowest fire rate of all the MG nests, the excellent cooling makes it incredible at mowing down large numbers of enemies. So while the MG42’s high rate of fire would make it amazing in short bursts, the tradeoff of not being able to have sustained fire for long would make it fairly balanced against the other MG nests in my opinion.
I didn’t actually know this, but my point still stands. The Type 92 cools down faster both before and after you overheat, allowing you to resume firing much faster. Also, the rate of fire on the MG34 is 800, while on the Type 92 it is only 450, meaning that the actual amount of time that you can fire them for until you overheat is actually longer for the Type 92. The Type 92 is also more accurate than the MG34, allowing you to have better accuracy with the 68 rounds you get.
Let’s be real the M1917 and M1919 is practically just flavor text difference
I’d suggest the M1917A1 variant, as it was developed in the 1930’s and it has a 450-600 RoF much as the M1919A4 has 400-550 RoF
That being said, water cooled guns do have a buff to their overheat mechanic, so it WOULD be nice to have the M1917 for extremely sustained fire
Also as an additional balancing measure they could make water-cooled machine guns take longer to set up and take down to reflect their increased weight.
