There is something that irritates me playing Enlisted.
It’s the fact that it’s obviously aiming on tactical/strategic gameplay by giving you squads to play instead of a single soldier. But unfortunately the game - as it is in its current status - doesn’t support that given option much or at all.
It’s a total lack of leading/commanding the own squad - resulting in an AI, that’s acting in a most dumb way due to a lack of given orders.
Even early RainbowSix titles of the early 2000s had it done far better.
There’s no option to lead your team somewhat tactical - they just follow you like drunk lemmings and do literally nothing supportive. Even worse they act counterproductive.
What is missing?
- order for the squad’s stance
- order for firing at set target marks (currently they don’t even notice the target marks you set yourself)
- order for different fire options (like suppressive fire, response fire only, ceasing fire etc)
- waypoints for your squad to follow in order to lead split or flanking maneuvers and similar
- task options for your squad members (e.g. pioneer —> plant an anti tank mine at position xx)
- … fill up the list with your ideas
This will lead secondarily for a proper use of binoculars
Commander position (like in other games e.g. Post Scriptum) and map expansion
I think this really is missing.
Someone who at least tries to coordinate the actively playing squads on the field by guiding them
with orders given directly to the squads as a mission to fulfill (award it with xp-points in case of success and players will tend to follow the given orders).
The commanders main tool will remain the map, but also the active playing mode in second front line.
Therefore it’d be useful to show the given strategic orders on the map for each player.
I can also imagine a rudimentary short briefing for squad leaders to receive, which should be able to generate quickly by menu clicks. (Like: Pioneer squad XX —> move to map coordinates xx —> build a defense site —> response fire only /// or: Tank squad xx —> move to target xx —> breach and hold position)
Just a quick summary of my thoughts for improving tactical/strategic gameplay and improving communication between players, lowering the battlefields chaos of acting.
Feel free to add your thoughts or criticism.

Too complicated, just make AI more survivable and not run into enemy fire and it should be fine

The commander should have different powerful call ins to help the team. For ex
Rocket barage/Powerful arty strike
Bombing run (should be only his ability)
Ammo drops

Too complicated?
Surely the position of the commander isn’t necessarily for everyone’s taste.
But as from my experience from shooters that offer this position, it’s one that certain players WANT to play what leads to it being taken right from the beginning of every match.
It’s possibly not the role for current players that even fail to play a pioneer properly, missing to build rally points or ammo boxes over an entire match, but let me guarantee you that a commander position will always be occupied by a player willing to play it properly.

Not saying it’s a bad idea, just don’t expect the lazy devs to put any thought into it

I like the idea of ammo drops.
But I think an additional air strike lead in by a commander would lead to a spam of artillery overall with the regular artillery strikes of radiomen.
Maybe the commander should acknowledge map-placed strikes before they are carried out. Or reject them.
As for bombing runs, I don’t think the devs will skip the active part of bombers.
But as suggested above - they could (maybe exclusively) give orders for bomber crews to carry out a a given order.
Love it - yes please. Mine usually just get killed while blocking my shots. It’s improving but is all still a bit dim witted.
I sometimes try instruct my squad to get to an objective while I cover, but then they get out of range and turn back. Or I’ll camp them somewhere while I attack - they won’t do anything to cover and again, eventually they follow and all die.
Would love to be able to set out a series of things for ai engineers to build too. Or like you said, locations for mines or suppressing fire and waypoints for a better route.
Squads is one of the main things that seperates this game from others and it’s just not taken advantage of nearly as well as it could be.

Exactly this, their main selling point is the Squads mode, not the lone fighters mode. A lot of the mechanics seem to focus on the individual (with the squad just being extra lives) rather than using it like a team. They should take notes from Hell Let Loose, Squad, Rising Storm/Red Orchestra 1 & 2, ARMA, etc. Some of those mechanics might be too much for this game, though i’m sure people will enjoy that sort of challenge over the current metas that play out like other FPS shooters: CSGO, CoD, Battlefield, etc (which the lone fighters mode was made for, and died)
