This could be a pretty great way for a player to coordinate battles and even provide some support in battles.
In my mind this could be implemented like it was in BF4, where a player provided orders, recon aircraft and even air dropped supplies into points. Another way to do it would be to have an actual player on the field operating a radio like in Rising Storm 2 and other Red Orchestra series.
What do you guys think?
Too much room for malicious players to hurt their team
I think this would be awesome; I am always open to them adding more strategy to the game. Generally Commanders are voted in, so unless you can full stack, it’s tough to abuse. I guess this would have to be accompanied by a report system.
I like idea of scout planes etc. but position of commander could be abused just like in BF4.
In my opinion better way to do this would be to add more options for radio operators. They acively fight in the battle (so team don’t have to worry that thay have -1 player effectively), thay have radio (shocking, I know) and they could be more support-orientaited squad. Radio has 1 option, engineers have like 8 so I don’t see any reason not to give some more utility to radio squad.
Also whole team won’t rely on one player to hopefully do sth useful. If noob was a commander than team would have hard time because of lack of support that enemy team has.
yeah… not to be the " black sheep "… but you are not considering a few factors.
don’t get me wrong, i would love this idea, that could also call some supply canister, or paradrop some vehicles like general idea of commander. giving orders and such, but it would only work for community games. where’s those spots are placed for known games ( like, this guy as commander spot; knoes the players on the ground squads. and he knoes that those guy will follow his orders as he played with them before ).
anyway, the problems with the commander in open servers, it would be find the right person for the job.
and locking something by tank it’s not gonna work either.
other reason it would be, not everyone follow orders.
and for the same reasons, in enlisted i’m in charge of my squad. meaning that i have to make decisions, and take risk which might cost the life of my squadmates on my own. and for a selfish perspective like 50% of enlisted community thinks, my closer spawn to the front line.
and the last reason, it’s the one @5762269 partially described.
such power in someone’s hand might not be the best or ideal for a swift victory.
also, there are many factors that should be discussed regarding the commander spot, power, limitation and functionality.
for the rest, cheers.
ros2 has commander …I would take commander spot and then spawn my whole team under enemy napalm attack and get my whole team killed then get removed from the server good times were those
don’t joke about that.
we still have ptsd from that
At least the part about people not following orders can be solved by assigning combat zones to a squad. if the squad is in the zone or kills hostiles in the zone, it earns 5x normal experience. That’ll get most people to obey as it reduces the grind tremendeously
What is ros 2 ? Rising Storm 2? Or something else ?
Got any ideas? would love to hear those.
In a game where even the bots programmed to follow your orders dont do so, cant agree more lmao.
Except, knowing Gaijin, they’d remove 60% of XP gain to counterbalance this…
yes rising storm 2 vietnam
- Smoke screan
- Recon plane
- Star shell (if we will ever have night fights)
- Different types of artylery (now we have only one)
- Suply para drop
It would be mostly artillery options since planes are crewed by players.
Unless we give AI option to pilote bombers. Than radio can call for CAS and bots will pilot the planes (will not count towards a limited number of active aircraft). Thanks to this fighter pilots will have sth to do and will be more useful. And guys on the ground will be afraid of leaving spawnpoint
Ps.
Plz don’t start shitstorm about smoke being unrealistic, it’s a game.
I think that calling big smoke screens and other artillery types (for example Nebelwerfers for Germany and Katyushas for Russia) are cool idea. They could be less precise than standard artillery we have now, but faster and even more intimidating.
Exactly
Na, katyusha was way more intimidating
But rocket arty could work (smaller area, but can kill tanks)
Arty firing smoke shells isn’t all that far fetched either, afaik.
a) I don’t know what you mean by “katyusha was way more intimidating”. It’s almost the same weapon/tech but used in larger numbers. The sound is the same in my opinion.
b) Rocket art. was very inacurrate so I don’t think small area is an option. I would rather say larger area.
c) As far as I know rocket art. was mainly used to fire at soft targets (infantry in the open) and firing at the tanks was mainly to harass them than to destroy them.
Exactly More = more
I wasn’t referring to total radius, but to per-rocket radius
They had a much better shot at taking them out than normal arty
Talking about effectiveness of one rocket is like talking about one bullet. Basically pointless when you use them in as large numbers as possible (if following the doctrine).
Quick summary of rocket art. vs tanks (based on Nebelwerfer):
- It’s hard to hit single target so shooting concentration of tanks is the best way to inflict dmg
- Can set enemy tanks on fire but it’s not reliable
- Close miss can knock out tank crew
- Blinds enemy due to large amount of smoke
- Separates enemy tanks from infantry making them vulnerable to friendly AT infantry
So I wouldn’t say that it’s better than regular artillery in destroying tanks. It’s better in creating opportunities to destroy tanks.
I would love a commander mode. Commander was one of my fave things to play in BF3/BF4.
I would recommend a short mandatory Commander training mission, and limiting the mode to players who have played at least 10 hours of gameplay so they know the basic gist of the game and how victory is achieved.
Also, a voting system, like in BF, where players can show approval or disapproval of a Commander. Over time, if a Commander is consistently criticised, their ability to play the role would be affected.
On the subject of getting people to follow orders, again taking a leaf from BF’s book, a reward to squads that follow them.
