In 1903, a Belgian gunsmith from Liège, Charles Ph. Clement, patented a pocket automatic pistol of the original design, called the Clement M 1903 (Clément model 1903).
The Clément pistol was originally designed for the Spanish centerfire cartridge “5 mm Charola-Anitua”, created at one time for use in the Charola pistol. As the Clement M 1903 outlived the Charola-Anitua design, and thanks to the successful sales of the Belgian pistol, the Spanish 5mm cartridge also became known as the “5 mm Clement”.

However, in 1906, due to the creation of the 6.35 mm Browning cartridge for the FN Browning pocket small-sized pistol of the 1906 model, the Clement M 1903 model was modified for the new Browning ammunition.
The Clement M 1903 pistol operates on the basis of the recoil of the free bolt.
The recoil spring is placed above the bolt, resting with one end on the stop fixed with two screws in the rear of the frame, and the other on the protrusion on the bolt bar.
The fixed barrel, made at the same time as the frame, has 6 right-hand grooves.
The barrel and recoil spring are hidden by a fixed casing, fixed by two screws to a protrusion in the rear of the frame. During recoil, the bolt, located slightly at an angle relative to this protrusion, moves out from under the casing quite far back, without touching it.
Single-action trigger mechanism.
On the left side of the weapon, in the rear upper part of the frame, there is a mechanical safety flag.

The cheeks of the pistol grip in early models were made of wood, and later of dense rubber.
On the left side of the weapon (on the casing and frame), as a rule, a stamp was applied indicating the patent and the manufacturer of the pistol.
Although the Clement M 1903 pistols enjoyed some success in the firearms market, in 1908 their production was discontinued due to the release of new models developed by Clement.
