TLDR: B5N2 is currently the only option for attacker pilot II squad. The Ki-100 should have been designated for attacker pilot squad II cuz the B5N2 can’t dogfight.
Yes, the Ki-100 was originally designated as a fighter but, with the scarcity of a assault planes in the current Japanese line-up, I believe this should have been designated as an assault plane/ground attack plane for the assault pilot II squad. Besides, with the relatively heavy armament and payload for BR III it fits the role of an assault plane.
Additionally, the Japanese don’t have legacy squads which makes it difficult to go head-to-head against the Americans who can cycle the same planes using legacy squads.
Take this for example in a BR3 battle:
The best planes a Japanese player can bring are:
- Fighter pilot squad II: Ki-100
- Assault pilot squad II: B5N2
- Assault pilot squad III: D4Y1
Whereas the best planes an American player can bring:
- Fighter pilot squad II: P-51D
- Fighter pilot squad II: P-51D (legacy squad)
- Assault pilot squad I: P38-G
The P-51 and P-38 can dogfight and perform ground attack roles. The Ki-100 and D4Y1 can do that too and can put up a fight against them. Whereas the B5N2? We all know that plane only makes a one-way trip because after you drop the bombs, there’s already a fighter plane chasing you and you can’t do anything about it.
However, if the Ki-100 is designated as an assault plane, the Japanese have better odds. Here’s the best planes they can bring in BR III battle:
- Fighter pilot squad II: A6M2
- Assault pilot squad II: Ki-100
- Assault pilot squad III: D4Y1
What do you think?
P.S. thanks for fixing the Suomi KP-31 uniforms!
