Time to Stand up and take a Rifle Booi
This is not elegant nerf at all, but overnerf i’d say. Right now with 10-20 mortar rounds (if you have 2 mortarmen) this class becomes super situational. Maybe it’s still good for paying players to keep mortarman class their rotation for defending some strongpoint when needed but for free players this class now becomes completely useless because there are much more useful soldier classes to keep.
Another reason why this nerf isn’t well thought out are engineers. They are not needed anymore for ammo boxes, so engineers are now completely useless in mortarmen class now as they can’t build AA or AT guns like specialized engineer classes.
I hope developers will soon come up with more thought out solution, for example giving more rounds to mortarmen or remove mortar class completely and adding mortars to engineer teams. Also it would be awesome to have some vote system for big nerfs like this because some players are always screaming to nerf this and nerf that but we don’t know if the they are the majority at all.
Again. Not completely useless. Just much more skill based now instead of spamclicking for lots of kills. And engineer squads have more use than just refilling your mortar, like building antitank hedgehogs to block off all enemy armor or setting up sandbags to make a point MUCH harder to push into.
Which is why passively sitting out of bounds with a mortar shouldn’t be rewarded.
With limited ammo, mortarman have to actually be further up and fighting to wait for a priority target to drop a shell on.
The amount of people simply SEETHING in this thread because they cant spam their mortars over and over to farm free kills in safety is just incredible. Wow
What a pleasure to play without a rain of mortars falling on you without stopping, wonderful. I haven’t seen mortars all day
those who cry for the mortar, recognize that you dont move in all the game always in the distance killing
The amount of people who are foaming at the mouth that they suddenly now can operate a MG nest to just farm kills without worrying about artillery responding to them is just incredible.
This is why, in my opinion, we need mortars added to regular squads, rather than being restricted to mortar squads. (and to compensate, mortar squads getting more ammo than they do now, though I agree that keeping them from being able to reload ammo makes sense, but only under the assumption the above two changes are implemented.)
A good mortar was far, far better than a single radioman squad or a single bomber since they could bomb a point nearly indefinitely, which is a huge issue. Bad mortars aren’t an issue, but I’ve had 190 kills before as a mortar team on some of the single CP maps with zero deaths which is clearly broken.
Since when was artillery the major threat to MG nests?
More specifically mortars, as if someone bothers to spot an MG nest, you can drop a few mortar rounds onto the MG nest to destroy it rather rapidly. Though artillery does have a chance of such and will scatter any AI in a squad on the point.
That’s still an extremely valid application to mortars even with limited ammo. Just save your shells for a real target like that instead of spamming the objective.
#1 threat to MG nests is and always has unironically been bots with bolt-actions
This is why I want mortars in regular squads, because the mortar squad itself has no point outside of those limited case scenarios, especially as so few people bother spotting such things, and often when you spot an MG nest or the like, you get squad wiped immediately after you get a spot down.
So being able to rapidly respond by switching over to a mortar when an MG nest gets called out on the map would be nice.
Like I said, in CBT a few squads had mortar slots so it would make complete sense to bring them back now.
If this is all they have done then the mortar is now useless - not “fine”
there needs to be something intermediate - IRL a British 2" mortar section would have over 70 rounds available - 30 at the mortar with crew of 3 and another 42 in immediate reserve.
A nonsense way to include mortars - just more a-historical stupidity.
It may be a-historical, but I’d argue it’s better for gameplay - and generally speaking, gameplay trumps historical accuracy, within reason. It would let people utilize mortars without overemphasizing passive gameplay.
I do think that a mortar squad should get more ammo than they’re currently limited to. But I also think that it should be limited, and not reward people staying perpetually in the back and not assisting with the push.
You can argue it is better gameplay - I disagree.
And it is the sort of stupidity that will drive away those who seek a good WW2 game and not a fantasy one.
Also I note it is an UNANOUNCED change - wtf - a huge patch and a major change and htey forgot to mention it??
Why do you think it would be worse for gameplay?
