Can someone please explain the fire icon when I get one-shot in a tank?

Hi, I’ve been playing for a few weeks but can’t seem to understand the occasional insta-death I get in a tank. Here’s what happens:

Usually I use the Panzer III on Normandy Campaign. I do OK with it, but every now and then, the top player (almost always) on the enemy team instantly kills me in a 100% healthy tank and all crew members inside it. All I see in the kill feed is a flame icon. No weapon name. One minute this enemy player is dropping 500 lb precision bombs and clearing the map and the next they’re insta killing my tank?. What is happening? I don’t wanna cry cheater cuz there’s likely a good explanation out there. Maybe a high-level weapon I’m not familiar with? Any help is appreciated.

it’s happened to me quite a few times ( can’t explain it ) ?

it’s likely because they got an ammo rack hit

Usually, an instant death is the result of an ammunition detonation. If an ammo rack is destroyed it explodes. A direct hit with a tank shell is sometimes enough to destroy ammo, but sometimes it takes two or more hits.

With practice, you can learn where the ammo is, and destroy it fairly reliably.

Ammunition is often stored in sponsons, either side of the tank’s outer edges.

This is War Thunder, but the internal models are similar.

This is a different point so I’ll make a separate post. If you are getting killed by bombs, this is usually because of the amount of TNT and the blast radius of those bombs. Dropping bombs on top of or right next to a tank is often enough for a kill. The only counter is to keep moving, or find overhead cover.

Once, it also happened to me when I was flying a crippled plane quickly going down, to wreck a tank (a tiny pz2, but hey, a tank still) by crashing on it, ie. Without any bomb! My russian pilot knowing his impending doom was coming decided it was fitting to adopt the Japanese pilot kamikaze style. I was kinda surprised as I only wanted to spook the tanker out and perphaps blind him with my flaming wreck. Was a good surprise.
So needless to say, it counts as a “one shot (crash?)” of a tank.

when some one shot your tank/tnt mine or a plane bomb and you kill your tank but a fire provoked by that shot killed a crew member inside that icon ill apear.
